2011 Award
Smarty Kids L is for Lion Comfort Cuddly Blanky
(Kids Preferred $13 Score:)

Lion is the most colorful of the three Comfort Cuddly toys. His body is orange with a red mane that is studded with satin strips of ribbons in blue, green and burgundy. He has stitched features for safe keeping and patterned tummy and paws. Like the other Cuddly Blankies, this is a 10-inch unstuffed doll that is easy to clutch. It is not really a blanky in the traditional sense, but it just may become a comfort toy that kids like to hold onto as they rest. It makes no sounds, but there is plenty for eyes to see and textures for little hands to explore. Also see O is for Owl and F is for Frog Cuddly Blanky toys. Infants and up.

The company has signed a verification form complying with our safety requirements. We did not independently test this toy in a lab.

2011 Award
Step 2 Push Around Taxi
(Step 2 $49.99 Score:)

Our tester took this to a NYC park for a spin...and it was a huge hit with everyone on the playground. The Taxi is the latest in Step 2's Push Along line that allows your child to enjoy a ride (while their feet are off the ground). Our latest toddler tester loves her drink holder. Our parent testers appreciate the seat belt for younger toddlers and the sturdiness of the design. A great way to get your toddler from point A to point B before they're ready to cycle themselves there.

2011 Award
Little People Wheelies Zig the Big Rig
(Fisher-Price $29.99 Score:)

Zig is a true toddler vehicle. It does more than just roll about and yet it's not too complicated for toddlers to  operate. Zig is a particularly friendly truck--he talks, makes some sounds and his face moves when activated (but not in a creepy way).  What our testers loved about it was the way the side of the truck opens and launches the little Wheelie car that comes with Zig. (You can buy more Wheelies separately). This motion is easy to activate- and is just right for toddlers who love making things happen again and again. Zig is chunky and moves around under your child's power (we like that aspect of it as well).  A sturdy choice for toddlers that has just the right amount of bells and whistles.

Winnie the Pooh Large Plush
(Kids Preferred $25 Score:)

A soft cuddly Pooh is done up in creamy colored plush that has stitched features. He's an armful, 14" big but light enough for toddlers to hug and lug with ease. He's positively silky to the touch and is able to sit up without flopping over. Two of Pooh's friends, Eeyore and Tigger are available in the same size and are equally huggable, though Pooh is the sweetest of the three. There are also 9-inch variations with jingles in their tummies and Piglet is included in this smaller sized collection. Infants and up. Surface washable only. Winnie the Pooh and Friends
(Kids Preferred $14 Score:)

A darling collection of 9-inch plush huggables featuring Winnie the Pooh, Tigger, Piglet and Eeyore. Each of these soft lovable dolls has arms long enough to grasp, safe stitched features, and a jingle sound inside. These are a good choice for sitting up babies and young toddlers. We passed on the smaller Pooh and friends light up musicals that have unpleasant electronic sounds. Surface washable only. PBS Kids Exploration Blocks: Building
(PBS Kids $29 Score:)

A 36-piece set makes a good choice for beginning builders or as an add-on to other block sets. Although these are not unit block size, they add interest as decorative elements. Some of the blocks are painted with small shaped that resemble windows. There are arches, cylinders, squares, rectangles, triangles and other odd shapes that kids will find useful for creative building. The set includes a cloth storage bag. All of the pieces are big enough to be safe for toddlers. 1 1/2 & up. There is also a smaller 23 piece set with interesting shapes that is also interesting. PBS Kids Tower Blocks (29.99)

The company has signed a verification form complying with our safety requirements. We did not independently test this toy in a lab.

2011 Awards
Corolle Rag Doll Poppy
(Corolle $31 Score:)

With her embroidered face and all fabric body, this adorable 13" doll is lightweight enough for toddlers to hug and hold. She wears a red and white print dress, white underwear, striped stocks and hot pink shoes. To keep things simple and age appropriate, the clothes are sewn in place. Her pink and orange hat matches her shoes and socks and both have a velour like feel while the knit arms, legs and face have a soft but different texture. A good first doll with long enough arms and legs for toddlers to grab and carry with ease. They say 0 +,  but this looks more like a toddler doll to us.

2011 Award
Guidecraft Sun Sorter
(Guidecraft $25 Score:)

This is an open-ended puzzle for kids to explore. The 12 pieces are all the same size but in different colors. They fit back into the board with in any number of color arrangements. Or they can be arranged in a zig-zag line or a full circle outside of the puzzle board. Use them for color matching and naming with the beginner. There is a small booklet with playful ideas for introducing this clever puzzle. Made of rubberwood and stained with eco-friendly dyes, this is marked for 2 & up. We think this will be a tough for 2's but really good and challenging fun for 3-5's.
