2014 Awards
(Childs Play $16.99 Score:)

For young children the long good-bye of a grandparent with Alzheimer's can be especially frightening. A grandparent is not just forgetting, but suddenly no able to do many of the things they used to enjoy together. Even more upsetting, Grandma may act angry, even when the child has done nothing wrong. In this tender book, Jessica Shepherd tells the story with clarity, mixing in the reality without turning this into a dark journey for a young child. It's a reassuring book that follows Grandma to a nursing home with its ups and downs. Finally it speaks to the child's need to know that with all these changes, the caring comfort of loved ones is there. 4-8

2012 Award
I Have Two Homes
(by Marian DeSmet/ illus. Hynke Talsma, Clavis $15.95 Score:)

Nina's story of life in a family of divorce is, as the jacket suggests, an "uncomplicated" account of what it is like to have two homes. It is a sad tale and reads more like bibliotherapy. Yet, we think it worth noting, since it can be a conversation opener for families dealing with similar situations. Sometimes a book can open the floodgates or at least help children know that they are not unique and that others have lived through such events.
