2012 Award
Five Little Monkeys Jump in the Bath
(by Eileen Christelow, Houghton Mifflin $7.99 Score:)

As always those five silly monkeys are into their mischief making. This time out they have had too much icky sticky ice cream mixed with sloppy gloppy mud. So into the tub they go. Will this do the job? Well, yes, until they start slurping their soupy supper. Poor Mama! The rhyming is playful as always, making this another fun read-aloud. Printed on sturdy cardboard pages that will survive less than gentle little hands. 2 & up.

2010 Award
Tuck Me In!
(by Dean Hachohen & Sherry Scharschmidt, Candlewick $9.99 Score:)

It's time for bed and the question of the night is—who needs to be tucked in? As each animal on the left page says 'I do!' the reader turns a half page that turns out to be a blanket. Toddlers and preschoolers are going to love the novelty and repetition of this zippy book. All sorts of animals with feathers, hooves, stripes, horns, and other features are pictured waiting to be tucked in to be told "Good-night!" Bright illustrations and colorful blankies make this a delightful choice for any child you know from 18 months up.  We think even 4's would like having it read to them and beginning readers will love the repetition and figure out the animal’s name from the illustration.

I'm Not Sleepy
(by Jonathan Allen, Hyperion $14.99 Score:)

Baby owl has been up all night, as all owls do. When morning comes and his mother says it's time to sleep, Baby owl says he is not tired. Sound familiar? Kids will see the humor of this all too common situation. As all the other creatures tell Baby he looks sleepy, Baby does his best to explain it away. Finally, it is Papa Owl who finds the right solution. A perfect bedtime tale with amusing art and very little text for that "one more book" to cap off the bedtime ritual. 2-5
