2012 Award
Creativity for Kids Mask Making Kit
( $20 Score:)

With plastic mask bases, full face and smaller eye shape, kids can create 4-5 different masks with special plaster wrap. The kit comes with a variety of items for decorating the masks with feathers, tissue paper, paint ribbons, glitter and glue. This is apt to be a bit of a messy craft, so protect the surface with the plastic sheet, gloves and other items that come with the kit. You may want to add some newspaper as well. There will be a waiting time for the plaster strips to dry before the decorating can begin. Adult supervision is strongly recommended. That said, working with the plaster makes for an interesting craft experience. 7 & up.

Age: Early School Years, Later School Years. Award Year: 2012. Click here to purchase the product on Amazon.com.

2006 Awards
Musical Jewelry Box
(Alex $19.99 Score:) Originally a Platinum Award winner in 2000, this box has been updated (with extra bling). This is the quintessential jewelry box with a spinning ballerina inside. Comes with sparkling gems to glue on top and a frou-frou tutu of pink tulle on a hot pink ribbon to attach to the box. A very girlie-girlie gift, but likely to win the oo-oohs and ah-h-h-hs of beginners. The box is finished in pink so there's not a lot to do, but it's showy and quick. 6 & up.

Age: Early School Years. Award Year: 2006.

2003 Awards
Crunch Art
(Hands on Toys $6 Score:) An innovative, open-ended designing project that is easy to do. Kids simply place a small piece of fabric on the foam board and push down with the "cruncher/puncher" tool (which is not sharp) and the fabric is in place. They can make designs or draw pictures to fill with colorful fabric, mylar squares, or chenille stems. A great office/quiet time toy. New for 2004, themed kits (Butterfly, Dinosaur, Rainbow, Panda, Fish and Toucan ). We prefer the open-ended kits, but some kids find the framework comforting. 5 & up. SNAP Award. This new art kit develops hand power as well as creativity. This does call for the ability to grip and press, but unlike a rug hook it is easy to do. It is pretty open-ended and mess-free.(888) 442-6376. SNAP: Grasping the puncher-cruncher calls for a firm grip. Using it may in fact strengthen hand muscles. Since this is a fairly openended product the act of doing this may be totally satisfying. For added stucture you can trace the child's initials on the foam board and encourage him to use ne color to to trace the letters. Once this is done he can use other colors as background.

Age: Early School Years. Award Year: 2003.

A cute violet canvas purse with more than 100 felt stick-ons to decorate it. This is pretty easy to do with no cutting and pre-stick felt pieces. Yet, the finished product is pretty enough to carry with the pride of being able to say..."I made it myself!" The box say 3 & up. We'd say 5 & up is closer to the right age.
