Felt Crown Set, Ballet
(Mudpuppy Press $19.99 Score:)

Cleverly designed for versatility, this premade felt crown with a Velcro closing to adjust head sizes, comes with an assortment of stick on badges that can be added to the frame of the crown. Done in pink, lavender, purple, gold and white, this is a nice accessory for a ballet themed birthday or other special occasions. It will be enjoyed for other games of pretend by dancing princesses. The company makes several other crowns including a less gender specific birthday crown for boys and girls and a wonderful Pirate crown for dramatic play...yo ho ho!

SNAP:  More than a prop for pretend, this is also a toy that can be useful for refining fine motor skills and giving children with physical challenges a sense of empowerment...they can design something to wear thanks to the velcro pieces that can be lifted and rearranged.

Age: Preschool, Early School Years. Award Year: 2014. Click here to purchase the product on Amazon.com.

2010 Award
General Grievous Spinning Electronic Lightsaber
(Hasbro $39.99 Score:)

Star Wars fans young and old will really appreciate this spinning electronic lightsaber that you can use as one uber lightsaber-or take apart and have two to use for pretend play. Each saber lights up (one is green and the other is blue); both make that wonderful humming sound when activated.  The gyro-grip takes a little practice but is really satisfying once you get the hang of it.  No matter the age of your Star Wars fan, this will be at the top of the list.

Age: Early School Years, Later School Years, Tweens, Teens, Adult. Award Year: 2010. Click here to purchase the product on Amazon.com.

2010 Award
Star Wars Boba Fett Electronic Helmut
(Hasbro $$44.99 Score:)

There was a great deal of excitement here when the STAR WARS toys arrived.  One of the hits was this new Baba Fett helmet--that is adjustable so that it will fit everyone (much to the delight of our interns). It takes 3 batteries (the first are included- also nice).  The helmet says certain Baba Fett phrases ("You can run, but you can't hide." "Surrender...or face disintegration." "You have not seen the last of me.")  and makes electronic sounds.  The phrases and sounds will change when you move the antenna on the side up and down.  A fun prop for younger fans of the Clone Wars and those older Star Wars fans in your life.

Age: Early School Years, Later School Years, Tweens, Teens, Adult. Award Year: 2010. Click here to purchase the product on Amazon.com.

2010 Award
Groovy Girls Maddie Mermaid Costume
(Manhattan Toy $40 Score:)

What do mermaids wear for Halloween or other big dress up events? How about a scrumptious purple jersey bodice trimmed with a shirred metallic band and sequins on top of a teal blue velvet skirt. Best of all the cutaway skirt trails in the back with a teal blue metallic mermaid's tail. Note, the skirt is cut very high in front and for comfort's sake, you will probably need a pair of tights to cover up bare legs. This will make a very special costume for Halloween or other events where a mermaid might be invited. Trimmed with a purple ruffle on the skirt, a teal fringe at the waist and teal puffed sleeves, this is a very special outfit that even includes a shell shaped lavender metallic pocketbook trimmed with sequins and a handle of pale blue pearls. 3 & up.

2009 Award
Acting Out Swan Lake Musical Skirt
( $40 Score:)

Like this company's many other musical skirts, tutus, and dance dresses, this pretty pink and white tulle tutu with pink satin bow at the waist, has a magical music box tucked into a hidden pocket. Turn the switch to "on" and your little ballerina can dance to the familiar music of Tchaikovsky's beautiful Swan Lake. The music is motion activated, so it will play continuously while the child is dancing. It turns off when the little Swan takes a break. Note: To conserve batteries turn the switch to "off" during rehearsal time or when the Swan becomes a Sugar Plum fairy. This is the newest addition to an award winning collection of dancing skirts that include the Nutcracker, Can-Can, Polka and others. The skirt with elastic waistband fits sized 3-6x. A sure fire hit!

Acting Out also makes full tutus with attached top; however, the elasticized skirts will fit for a longer time without being outgrown.   The company has signed a verification form complying with our safety requirements. We did not independently test this toy in a lab.

Age: Preschool, Early School Years. Award Year: 2009. Click here to purchase the product on Amazon.com.
