2015 Award
Skyrocket Chocolate Pen Kit
(Skyrocket Toys $29.99 Score:)

First we ned to confess; we are chocolahaulics. In spite of that, we usually avoid activity kits that are loaded with sugar. That said, we thought a few holiday sweets would be acceptable and besides--this is such an exceptional idea! Skyrocket's Chocolate pen kit lets you write in liquid confectioners chocolate. Kids can draw one-of-a-kind delicious shapes, letters, or use the molds to make designs. The chocolate melts simply by putting the pen kits in warm water; that's another feature we like a lot. No need to put things in the microwave oven with all the worry of someone getting burned from the hot liquid. The chocolate hardens at room temperature. You might even call this a STEM project, seeing how soldis turn to liquids and then back to solids again. Yes, it is educational and neat, too. The chocolate is self-contained and the melted candy never actually touches the pen; so clean up is pretty simple, too. The kit includes a half pound of premium confectioners chocolate in multiple colors, 50 candy molds, multiple pen tips, and gift bags specially made to share your custom candy creations. What a sweet way to learn your letters or make yummy chocolate gifts for friends and family. A fun family do-it-together project. Candy Craft refills and themed molds are sold separately. www.skyrockettoys.com

Crayola Crayon Carver
(Crayola $29.99 Score:)

Crayola has designed a motorized machine that allows you to personalize your crayons with your name, words, symbols. To design, you first pick your letter and symbol tiles, load them up into the front yellow positions. Once you're happy with your wording, place your crayon into the well and then you trace over the "letters and symbols" with a moving arm. While you're tracing the other end of the arm is carving into the crayon. There is a number expansion pack sold separately. For safety purposes the carving end is enclosed in plastic. Pending further testing. 6 & up.

2015 Award
Smithsonian Museum Craft Kit Triceratops
(Skullduggery $24.99 Score:)

Our 7 and 10-year old testers really liked all the steps of this plaster mold kit. In three easy steps, it is designed so kids get to turn the powder into plaster that pours into the mold and dries in about 45 minutes. Although they were less than thrilled with coloring the poster setting, they liked painting the pieces and pasting them to the poster. There is also a set with horses, one with three space crafts, and a skeleton, a pre-med kit for learning the names of the bones for serious minded crafters. The finished pieces are not standing models. They can only be displayed lying on the poster. 8 & up

2015 Award
Klutz Shrink & Link Jewelry
(Klutz $21.99 Score:)

Shrink and bake craft kits have been around for a long time, but what we liked about this one is the clarity of directions and the good looking art that kids can use. We also like the fact that this is not one of those instant crafts. It requires both patience and dexterity along with reading skills and working in an orderly way. These are all built into the fun and the pay-offs are larger and more attractive than most. Part book/part craft kit, this is one of those crafts that requires adult supervision since the oven is part of the action. It also does not come with colored pencils and markers, scissors or a paper punch; but chances are you have all of these and probably of better quality than what would be packed in an affordable kit. 10 & up.

Klutz String Art
(Klutz $19.99 Score:)

A book with a batch of art supplies that will keep hands busy for hours. The book includes clear directions, pins, threads, templates, foam boards and tracing paper to create some tricky looking string art. Kids can hang it up in their rooms or give it as gifts. Ideal for 10's and up who frequently get self conscious about their drawings not being as perfect as their expectations. This kind of art material gives them alternative ways to create and express themselves. It also challenges dexterity and stick-to-it-ness for projects tht are not instantly complete. These take patience. 10 & up

2014 Award
Crayola Shadow FX Color Projector
(Crayola $24 Score:)

Kids can use this innovative color projector in a number of different ways. They can draw designs on a see-through panel and project their original images on the wall with the three colored lights that pivot and allow kids to change the colors and brightness. Kids can place objects or themselves between the light and the wall to make shadow puppet shows or use the shapes provided in the kit. The projector has telescope arms so you can widen the projections. This is one of those fun art kits with a scientific edge, inviting kids to discover in a hands-on way how shadows, lights, and colors can create all kinds of images, large and small. It is also fun for storytelling and artistic expression. Kit includes special FX Gel Markers that can be stored in the base.  Testers preferred this projector to Crayola's new ceiling model. Requires 3 AA batteries. 6 & up

2014 Award
Crayola Virtual Design Pro-Fashion Set
(Crayola $38.99 Score:)

This is the deluxe version of the Crayola Virtual Fashion Show kit, one of the most innovative activity kits to come down the pike in a long time. Kids can create their own fabulous fashions in the 20 page Sketch Book by coloring the front and back of the images in the booklet. Next they take photos of their designs with their device, meaning smart phone or i-pad. Using the My Virtual app to customize the models looks and accessories, they create models ready for the runway. Once the designing is done, they can watch their original fashions come to life as 3-D models walk up and down the runway, showing front and back of their fashion. Their creations can be saved on the device to view again and again. Instead of giving over your device, most of the designing is done on paper and then viewed on the device. Now, this is technology they gotta love if they are into fashion! They say 6 & up. Wed say slightly older girls will put more into using this as more than a coloring book. The more design elements that older girls can add, the more impressive this will be. This deluxe kit comes with more tools than the Crayola My Virtual Fashion Show. It includes Design portfolio case, a 20-page design book, 36 colored pencils, pencil sharpener, 20 Super Tips markers, 4 stencils and My Virtual Fashion Show App. We discovered that other markers work just fine and you can print new templates directly from the app (no charge) so you always have more options and don't have to buy new notebooks in order to continue to create. Our ten year old tester said this was the most exciting new electronic art toy of the year. We have to agree.
