2011 Award
Polly Pocket Race to the Concert Playset
(Mattel $49.99 Score:)

The latest "big" set for the tiny Polly Pockets. This playsetting comes with three dolls, three separate race tracks and of course, four shops. It also plays "All Good Day" when activated. I don't know why they don't make more of the fact that it comes with a disco ball (our set came with two for some reason). You can race two Polly Pockets down the track - the first to get to the stage wins and the music comes on. There's also another track where Polly Pocket flies up and down on the loop-de-loop and ends up on the stage in the front of the two other Polly Pockets. We like the fact that there's some action here and not just shopping. Fun, and besides how can you knock a toy with it's own disco ball?

2010 Award
Ugly Doll Wind Up Tin Robots and Banks
(Schylling $8 Score:)

Ugly Doll fans will love these less cuddly but adorable wind-up robots. Bring home two and they can race. Bring home one as a novelty that can walk across tables, knock over blocks or just stand there ready for action in little pretend flights of fancy. They say 3 & up, we think these are a better bet for 5's & up. They make good party favors or novelty stocking stuffers.

Also special, Ugly Doll Tin Banks ($15) in the shape of colorful trucks with the same zany look that may be a reminder to save some of those pennies, nickels and dimes. Put one in the kitchen to catch loose change for a family treat. Or for the desk, there is also a Ugly Doll Tin Pencil Holder Pencil Holder Truck that will hold pencils and pens on the desktop.

The company has signed a verification forms complying with our safety requirements. We did not independently test this toy in a lab.

2010 Award
BigFoot Monster
(Fisher-Price $99 Score:)

Bigfoot comes in a big toy box that says he has more than 80 actions and phrases. We didn't count, but it appears he is loaded with lots of tricks. He has icon buttons that make him roar with anger, walk, sleep, laugh, tumble, play ball, exercise, burp (he says excuse me), say hello, pound his fists, and when you can take no more - mercifully, he even has a sleep button! All of these actions and more are controlled with a bigfoot shaped remote controller. Although Bigfoot is the one who does the actions, this is not exactly a sit and watch kind of toy. Kids are actively in control and have to "read" the icons if they want absolute control. So is it educational? Not exactly. Most kids will probably just enjoy the random action of pushing buttons and making Bigfoot go through his paces. It's not what we'd call a must have kind of toy, but it is a big novelty gift that will produce laughter and jolly short term memories. It comes with a rechargeable battery. 3-8

2004 Award
Soccer Guys
(Kaskey Kids $14.99 Score:) If you're looking for non-violent action figures that your child will love, look no further! Here's a truly satisfying kit that comes with 24 players, one referee, two soccer goals and a generous green felt 24" x 36" playmat. The carrying case (with a handle) makes this a great take along. The company also makes a Football Guys set. Both sets are great for dramatic play. We like the fact that there are no directions--leaving the play up to your child's imagination. Hooray! (or should we say Score!)

Age: Preschool,Early School Years. Award Year: 2004.
