Little People Big Animal Zoo
(Fisher-Price $39.99 Score:)

Great fun from the Little People gang! This new zoo comes with an over-sized Elephant that makes sounds and is articulated. Everyone wanted a turn playing with the elephant. The interactive setting has a monkey that swings back and forth on the tree top. ELephant can make food roll down the slide into the feeding pit. It comes with a Zookeeper and Mia. We'd recommend bring home some of the add-on animals (Our testers particularly liked the giraffe and hippo sets.) Lots of pretend possibilities with this mini-playsetting. Our test family, with mixed ages from infant to preschool, has had this for several weeks and it's still a favorite; one that they return to daily.  Marked 1 & up but will be enjoyed best by older toddlers and young preschoolers.

ELC Frankie Frog and his Flying Machine
(International Playthings $29.99 Score:)

Twist the propeller and this jolly plane will roll along with Frankie Frog at the controls. Unlike a plane for older children, this one goes slowly enough for toddlers to play with safely. The propeller makes a nice ratchety sound when it is wound up. Freddy has movable clickable head, arms and legs; he can stand or sit and wears a sporty pair of yellow goggles. Like other vehicles and figures in this collection, they have a nice feel and heft. Not too big and not too small for beginning pretend play. A special toy for 12-36 months.

Little Tikes Ultimate Cook Kitchen
(Little Tikes $150 Score:)

Our test family gave this kitchen setting very high grades. Our three-year old tester's mom tells us "he is having a ball with it..." He loves every detail of this kitchen and especially likes to make them Cappuccino and asking them if "we need some coffee?" She likes the fact that it went together easily and is also being enjoyed for pretend play by his six and seven-year old siblings. Although some of the hanging pieces do not stay in place, they had no complaints. It has been used daily since it arrived and as our tester's mom wrote, she is impressed with the durability of Little Tikes products... "if three boys can't destroy it, it has to be made well." We like the fact that his kitchen is not gender specific and will be enjoyed for years of dramatic play by boys and girls. 2 +

Little People City Skyway
(Fisher-Price $39.99 Score:)

It is a race to the surprise finish to discover where the winner is going to exit from this mighty three-foot skyway. Will it come out of the side exits or jump off a ramp. It is different every time. Besides, kids can flip the switches and to change the cars path. No batteries are needed to make the two little vehicles zip and zoom down the ramps. The set up also includes a working crane, gas pump, traffic signals, parking meter, and a gate that opens and closes. All great ingredients for early dramatic play. This is a really big piece of plastic that will be a wow-eee gift for toddlers who love playing the same game again and again. It may be a stretch for small toddlers to reach the top, but most twos will enjoy taking charge of the action. It is definitely big enough for two kids to enjoy together...think twins. Unlike similar looking roadways for toddlers, you can turn off the sounds and still play with this. Marked 18 months to 5 years. We think twos and threes are the right age for this.

Janod Framboisine Doll's Pram
(Janod $74 Score:)

Scaled for an older toddler and small preschooler, this colorful doll pram is perfect for pushing dolls, teddy bears about for dramatic play. It is not weighted, so it is meant for two's who are steady on their feet. It is not a walker for toddlers who are still holding on for security. Pricey, but one of those lovely toys that can be used and passed along to younger sibs or cousins.   Bright pink with polka-dots, this is a pretty gender specific toy.

Earlyears Baby Driver
(International Playthings $12.95 Score:)

Of course, every baby likes to be in the driver's seat and run the show. Here is a toy that makes that dream a reality. A small steering wheel makes a rachet sound as it is turned. It has a knob with gearshift that takes on three different position, plus a clicking direction signal, a quiet beep-beep horn, and a view of other cars on the road when the wheel is turned. Best of all, this attaches to a tabletop or high chair tray with a heavy duty suction cup. 6 months & up.
