McKenna Shoots for the Stars
(American Girl $14.95 Score:)

Aspiring young gymnasts will relate to McKenna's ambitious dreams of becoming an Olympic star. Even non-gymnists will find common ground with her school problems and need for a tutor and the rivalry that grows when her childhood friend becomes jealous of McKenna's new friendship with her tutor. Though the music is somewhat intrusive and the situations a bit predictable, this is like the old after school specials with lots of good messages and events that echo kid's own experiences. McKenna's tutor is wheelchair bound and though she is older and wiser, McKenna learns a lot about friendship and supporting someone else's needs as the story develops. It also delivers a serious message that needing the help of others is noto something to be ashamed of at any age. This is a film for school aged kids, not preschoolers. I hr. 35 min.

Age: Early School Years, Later School Years. Award Year: 2012. Click here to purchase the product on Amazon.com.

2012 Award
Storybook Treasures Caldecott Favorites
(Scholastic $19.99 Score:)

You get twenty award winning stories on these three DVD's. Among our favorites are The Snowy Day, Bear Snores, The Story about Ping, Make Way for Ducklings, Caps for Sale and so many more classics. A word of warning before you buy: many of these videos are only mildly animated and may look old-fashioned to cartoon savvy kids. On the otherhand, they are true to the illustrations of the books and have the added advantage of being viewed with or without text, so beginning readers can follow along or read with the sound off. In any case this is a good basic collection if you are building a film library for your children. 3 & up.

Age: Preschool, Early School Years. Award Year: 2012.

2011 Award
Storybook Treasures My First Collection Featuring Splat the Cat
(Scholastic $24.99 Score:)

A three-disk collection of DVD storybooks, featuring some brand new titles mixed in with many classic picture book videos. As a group these stories were selected for younger audiences and offer a nice variety of choices. All of the videos are lightly animated and all of them have a read-along option for beginning readers. Splat the Cat, the star of a new and charming series leads the first disk along with Leo the Late Bloomer, an old favorite by Leo Lionni, Hondo and Fabian and Picnic. Disk 2 leads with the classic Story of Ping, a little duck who learns a lot about life when he runs away, plus the picture books, Goose, The Most Wonderful Egg in the World, Duck on Bike, and Rosie's Walk . This DVD also includes a Spanish Language version of The Story of Ping . Disk 3 leads with The Napping House, a cumulative tale and also includes one of our OTP winners, Bear Snores On plus Each Peach Pear Plum, Drummer Hoff, and Wild About Books. If you own other Storybook Treasures you may want to check the full list carefully so that you are not buying a lot of duplicates. This is one of the problems with the series. Many of the stories appear in more than one collection. That said, it is still the best bet in children’s video.

Age: Preschool, Early School Years. Award Year: 2011. Click here to purchase the product on Amazon.com.
