The Tiny Seed Soft Book
(Eric Carle, Kids Preferred $9.99 Score:)

As fabric books go, this is one of the sweetest. The illustrations look like Eric Carle paintings and each page has something interesting to touch and explore. The sun has ribbon rays and a little worm is hiding under a flip-down mound of green. The silky fabric pages have crinkle sound built-in and the front cover has a chewy corner with textures for teething babies. A good laptime book with sensory learning to share with baby. A nice shower gift or going-for-a-visit goodie to bring along for baby.

SNAP: Fabric books like this one can survive tasting as well as early page turning. They are useful in helping kids learn how a book works from front to back and from left to right. Single objects on the page develop knowing and naming. You can expand on what is on the page by talking about the color, shape and looking for other objects in your home that are the same color. The sensory feedback on each page makes this a book children can enjoy alone as well as with you.

Kids Preferred, Fun Foods Teether Soft Book, The Very Hungry Caterpillar
(Eric Carle, Kids Preferred $15.44 Score:)

Familiar images of the Very Hungry Caterpillar decorate the pages of this fabric book that features familiar foods on each page to know and name. Designed for sensory learning this sturdy book has a plastic teether on the corner of the cover and one of the pages includes a lift up circle to reveal a peek-a-boo mirror. A yellow ring and red star shape (also good for chomping on) dangle from the easy to grasp green spine. A good lap toy to share with baby. Also fun, The Tiny Seed Soft Book, another fabric book by the same company.

SNAP: Durable enough for beginning page turning by independent wanna-be readers. American Babies
(developed by Global Fund for Children, Charlesbridge $6.99 Score:)

A collection of full color photos of a multicultural cast of babies and toddlers. There is a small text but the beauty is in the images on every page. These are taken by many different photographers, every image is a gem. Babies and toddlers like looking at pictures of other children and there's a lot to talk about as you turn the pages, depending on the interest and age of your lapsitter. One time you could find the baby's mouth, eyes, nose, teeth, etc. Another time you can talk about the baby's clothes or expression or what she is eating or looking at. Done on sturdy cardboard stock, this is a book toddlers will enjoy solo after you have shared it a few times. You do need to set the scene by introducing the concepts.
