Whose Hat is That?
(By Anita Bijsterbosch, Clavis $16.99 Score:)

A hat flies in the wind and lands on various animals that all claim to be the owner of the hat. This is a repetitive refrain book that children of a certain age love, since it is so predictable. It is also a knowing and naming book that presents less than fully realistic images of familiar animals. With some prompting, older toddlers will soon recognize these variations. Of course. in the end the hat is returned to the rightful owner and all is well in the world. 2 & up.

2013 Award
Winter is for Snow
(by Robert Neubecker, Hyperion $16.95 Score:)

Two points of view on the subject of winter and snow bounce back and forth. One child loves everything about the cold snowy days, while the other is more a stay-at-home hates the cold type. The latter sounds a bit more adult-like, but it is hard to know when such attitudes begin. In any case, the art sets the mood and the snow and winter just build into an irresistible marshmallow delicious world that includes holidays for everyone. Even the most anti-winter ones among us will not be able to resist. 3-5

No reluctance about going to school in this bouncy picture book. Kitty Cat's day is full of fun and the daily events of early school days. Told in bouncy verse that is reminiscent of that old rhyme, "Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear, Go upstairs..." 2 & up.

2013 Award
Maisy's Fairground
(by Lucy Cousins, Candlewick $17.99 Score:)

Just in time for summer and all the annual fairground attractions, Maisy and her pals will give little ones a preview of the fun they may expect to have or the fun of replaying some of the rides they may have enjoyed. The action packed pull tabs make the bumper cars move, and there's a bouncy castle, a swing that goes high and low, a giant slide, a roller coaster, ferris wheel, treats to eat and a merry-go-round, of course. You'll want to use this together, since little hands may accidentally break the paper engineering pieces. That said, this is a fun interactive book. 3 & up.

2013 Award
Have You Seen My New Blue Socks?
(by Eve Bunting/ illus. Sergio Ruzzier, Houghton Mifflin $16.99 Score:)

Duck cannot find his new blue socks. So begins this journey in verse with Duck asking fox and ox and finally the peacocks if they, by chance, have seen his socks. This will be a fun read-aloud and a good one for breaking the code for beginning readers. It's a one-joke book that is pretty predictable, but probably satisfying enough to hear more than once. 4-7
