2014 Award
Kids Preferred Eric Carle Push and Spin Popper Toy
(Kids Preferred $29.99 Score:)

A classic push and spin toy for sitting up babies. Truly easy-to-activate, baby simply pushes on the big red knob to make the colorful balls inside the dome spin and rattle. The colorful dots on the center-post, borrowed from the end pages of an Eric Carle book, also blur into bands of color. Babies are empowered with a sense of being able to make things happen. A hands-on way to learn about cause and effect.

2014 Awards
Sassy Peek-a-boo Barnyard Blocks
(Sassy $12.99 Score:)

Four textured fabric blocks with interesting patterns, sounds, and peek-a-boo flaps that make them easier for baby to grab and explore. Use these for looking at, touching, and talking games. Stack em up and use a swipe of the hand or a ball to knock them down. They put numbers, letters, and words on them, but by the time baby is ready for those the blocks will be old news.  Just enjoy them for their sensory possibilities and for playful games.

Age: Infants. Award Year: 2014.

2014 Awards
ELC Bendy Bird
(International Playthings $14.95 Score:)

A strong suction cup holds this zany looking bird to the high chair tray and invites little hands to twirl its wings that have tiny rattle beads inside; push the beak for a squeaky sound, push the tail feathers up and down or use them for teething; and make the birdy’s neck bend with a swipe of the hand. May be a good diversion for a few extra minutes of high chair sitting.

2014 Awards
Shake n Beats Tambourine
(Fisher-Price $8 Score:)

A fun combo rattle and mirror that involves all the senses. Marked for 3 months and up, this will be all right for early lap games or for gazing during tummy time. We think it will be even more fun for sitting up babies who can shake the rattle and discover their faces in the baby-proof mirror. Sitting up babies will be interested in turning the color rings and tapping the tambourine to make sounds. Look for the newest version of this toy. It was recently updated from an earlier version that did not have a mirror; this is a real improvement.  A sturdy toy, but on the heavy side, especially for young babies.

Age: Infants. Award Year: 2014.

2014 Award
Kaloo Colors Doudou Rabbit Musical
(Janod $34.99 Score:)

While most of the Kaloo line will make perfect baby shower presents, we love this soft huggable rabbit as a first birthday present. Young toddlers will love the easy-to-grasp orange arms, blue legs and multi-colored ears - all done in super delicious plush. There's a little owl that hangs from the "scarf" around his neck. You can pull this to activate the music. There is a tie on the back so that you can attach the rabbit to a crib or stroller but we really see this as a first huggable toy that will get lots of hugs!  Comes in a lovely gift box.

2014 Award
Earlyears Lil Shopper Play Set
(International Playthings $26.99 Score:)

So many goodies in this green felt shopping bag. An apple with a crinkle leaf and rattle, and orange that opens and closed with a rattle inside, a banana that has Velcro peels to pull open, a cabbage with crinkly leaves and a soft container with a cow on front and a mirror when you lift the top. Babies love the repetitive action of filling and spilling and these items are ideal for that. Learning to grasp these playing pieces, to pass them from one hand to another and to purposefully let go, helps to develop their fine motor skills. These fruits and veggies are also good for knowing and naming as well as early pretend. Or choose the bright yellow bag with a constuction set inside. There's a fabric vehicle, a stop sign, safety cone, a basket with a fabric rock, and a hard hat with mirror inside. This is the kind of toy that is a good choice for travel with lots of surprises to pull out of the bag as you spin a story and put the toys in baby's hands to explore. 6 months & up.

Age: Infants, Toddlers. Award Year: 2014. Click here to purchase the product on Amazon.com.
