2011 Award
Monopoly
(Hasbro $$12.99 Score:)

With all of the new versions of Monopoly that come and go, we felt it was important to honor the original. In our opinion, most of the electronic versions take away the fun of monopoly. Where's the fun if you're not the banker and responsible for giving the right amount of money back on a  purchase?  The "electronic banker" removes all of those great math skills from the game play.  While it may take a bit longer to play, have your child be the banker.

2002 Award
Cranium Cadoo for Kids
(Cranium $19.99 Score:) One of the best family games we've tested this year! The seven digit lot number can be found under the plastic tray on the bottom half of the game's box.

2003 Award
Chess Yankees vs. Mets
(USAopoly $34.95 Score:) Last year our testers raved about this company's major league versions of Monopoly (featuring Yankees, Mets, Red Sox, or Dodgers). New for are various chess sets, which feature the managers as the kings, and pitchers as the queens-you get the idea. These are for kids who are already well versed in the game. Also new and good fun for Charlie Brown and Lucy fans , Peanuts Monopoly. 8 & up.

Age: Later School Years. Award Year: 2003.

2006 Award
Raceway 57 and Chaturanga
(Front Porch Classics $74.95 Score:) Our older testers loved both of these new games, Chaturanga ($44.95 ), an Indian game, is said to be the earliest form of chess. It’s a strategy game with an element of chance, as players roll wooden dice and play one on one or in teams. Raceway 57 has a handsome track, mini-cars, and metallic playing boards. Players race to be the first to finish three laps without running out of fuel, tires, and suspension. They say 8 & up—we’d say more like 10 & up. (206) 826-3202.

Age: Later School Years. Award Year: 2006.

Chaturanga
(Front Porch Classics $44.95 Score:) Our older testers loved this Indian game, said to be the earliest form of chess. Also noteworthy, a Bookshelf version of Raceway ’57 (PLATINUM AWARD ’06). Our players did not love the design or play pattern of the new Wordspot (3); “there are more exciting word games like this.” (206) 826-3202.

2007 Award
Doodle Tales
(Cranium $16.95 Score:) Players are shown a picture with a missing image and asked to draw what they think fits best on their secret doodle pad. The judge then redistributes everyone’s drawings and spins the “caption wheel.” All players have to finish captions such as: “While we were on vacation” or “late last night . . .” The judge chooses her favorite creation (very subjective but everyone gets to be the judge!). 8 & up. (877) 272-6486.

2007 Award
Ringgz
(Blue Orange Games $19.95 Score:) A strategy game that becomes more interesting the more you play it. The idea is to capture as many territories on the board as possible by having the “majority of color” on any given territory. You place your colors down by placing either a colored disc (which captures the entire space) or rings of color. The added difficulty: you can only add your color to an adjacent space that already has your color, which means you can quickly be blocked off from adding any pieces. All wood. 8 & up. (415) 252-6372.

Age: Later School Years. Award Year: 2007.

2007 Award
Scrabble Premier Edition
(Restoration Hardware $149 Score:) If Scrabble is a family favorite, you may want to bring home this deluxe set that comes in a handsome mahogany-finished case with storage below the board and a lazy-Susan platform for easy viewing. The board is approximately 17" x 16" wide and comes with a timer, rulebook, scoreboard and pencil. We'd also recommend the Scrabble Electronic Dictionary ($55) for those heated word challenges!

Age: Later School Years. Award Year: 2007.

2006 Award
Star Wars Monopoly
(Milton Bradley $29.99 Score:) In honor of the last installment of the series, Hasbro has brought out several classic games with a SW theme. The Star Wars Saga Edition Monopoly ($29.99 1⁄2) is great fun with features that span the series including Darth Maul, Darth Vader, Yoda. The board takes you through the galaxy. For parents who enjoyed Stratego ($15.99 ) or Risk ($24.99 ), your kids will enjoy these versions with characters from all six movies. We’d skip the Chess Set ($29.99 ); the pieces are too difficult to distinguish for young chess players). (888) 836-7025.

Age: Later School Years. Award Year: 2006.
