2014 Award
Build,Dogs, Build
(by James Horvath, HarperCollins $15.99 Score:)

For city kids watching a building going up is often a favorite thing to do. Of course, as the work progresses the equipment changes and so does the view. For those who like to stay a little longer and watch, this little book, told in thyme, allows them to see more of the details as work progresses. Cast with cartoonish pooches as builders, this gives kids a close up look at a building going up. 4 & up

My Bibi Always Remembers
(by Toni Buzzeo/ illus Mike Wohnoutka , Hyperion $16.99 Score:)

Lovely oversized illustrations capture the life of an elephant herd in Africa's parched savannah and the role Bibi the Grandmother and other female elephants play in protecting their young. Playful little Tembo likes playing tag, chewing the juicy leaves of trees, chasing a stork and other diversions. Whenever Tembo gets separated she squeals and her mama or aunties hear her as well as the rumble of grandmother Bibi, the matriarch who always remembers the way to water and safety. 4-8

2014 Award
Go to Sleep, Little Farm
(by Mary Lyn Ray/illus Christopher Silas Neal, Houghton Mifflin $16.99 Score:)

A good night book at a level on beyond Good Night Moon. Told in verse and quiet shadowy illustrations, this evocation of night and sleep goes from earthbound mice under roots to pockets in a skirt going to sleep. It's one of those picture books that may appeal more to adults than children. 4 & up

A spirited good night book with young Max the Magnificent delaying the inevitable with all kinds of familiar tricks that may be more amusing in print than in person. Still, it’s all good natured humor and a silly way to say sleep tight! 4 & up

2014 Award
Is There a Dog in This Book?
(by Viviane Schwarz, Candlewick $16.99 Score:)

Viviane Schwarz takes the lift the flap book to a new and more sophisticated level. Unlike the usual toddler flap books this one has an amusing story line. Put simply, it's about three cats who think there is a dog in their house and they are afraid of dogs--but as the story moves along one of the cats thinks a dog might be nice to pet. In just a few amusing pages the tone of the story changes as the cats and dog begin to trust each other. It's hard to say how many times this lift the flap book will entertain, but let's just say, it is a lively and fun read the first time through. 3-7

2014 Award
Row, Row, Row Your Boat
(by Jane Cabrera, Holiday House $16.95 Score:)

Once again, Jane Cabrera takes a familiar folk song that most kids already know and turns them into a new version with pictures to match. This one is no exception. Here the rowers run into a mix of animals large and small. We like the idea of books to sing, though we prefer some of Cabrera’s earlier works. 3 & up

2014 Award
Very Little Red Riding Hood
(Teresa Heapy/ Sue Heap, Houghton Mifflin $16.99 Score:)

A totally new take on Little Red that will tickle you pink! As always, Little Red is off to her Granny's with cake. On the way she meets the well-known wolf, but she insists he's a fox. From there it just gets sillier and sillier. If you like fractured fairy tales, this one will not disappoint, although you may miss the fun of the usual repetition of 'what big eyes you have...and what big teeth you have,' etc. This is far more appropriate for the very little Red Riding Hood listeners. 4 & up.
