2014 Award
Is There a Dog in This Book?
(by Viviane Schwarz, Candlewick $16.99 Score:)

Viviane Schwarz takes the lift the flap book to a new and more sophisticated level. Unlike the usual toddler flap books this one has an amusing story line. Put simply, it's about three cats who think there is a dog in their house and they are afraid of dogs--but as the story moves along one of the cats thinks a dog might be nice to pet. In just a few amusing pages the tone of the story changes as the cats and dog begin to trust each other. It's hard to say how many times this lift the flap book will entertain, but let's just say, it is a lively and fun read the first time through. 3-7

2014 Award
Row, Row, Row Your Boat
(by Jane Cabrera, Holiday House $16.95 Score:)

Once again, Jane Cabrera takes a familiar folk song that most kids already know and turns them into a new version with pictures to match. This one is no exception. Here the rowers run into a mix of animals large and small. We like the idea of books to sing, though we prefer some of Cabreraís earlier works. 3 & up

2014 Award
Very Little Red Riding Hood
(Teresa Heapy/ Sue Heap, Houghton Mifflin $16.99 Score:)

A totally new take on Little Red that will tickle you pink! As always, Little Red is off to her Granny's with cake. On the way she meets the well-known wolf, but she insists he's a fox. From there it just gets sillier and sillier. If you like fractured fairy tales, this one will not disappoint, although you may miss the fun of the usual repetition of 'what big eyes you have...and what big teeth you have,' etc. This is far more appropriate for the very little Red Riding Hood listeners. 4 & up.

2014 Awards
Whose Hat is That?
(By Anita Bijsterbosch, Clavis $16.99 Score:)

A hat flies in the wind and lands on various animals that all claim to be the owner of the hat. This is a repetitive refrain book that children of a certain age love, since it is so predictable. It is also a knowing and naming book that presents less than fully realistic images of familiar animals. With some prompting, older toddlers will soon recognize these variations. Of course. in the end the hat is returned to the rightful owner and all is well in the world. 2 & up.

Sam has always been number one when he races his car, always that is until his friend Maggie beat him. Did Sam give up? No way. In his next race Sam thinks he might be winning until something else happens that makes him understand that winning is not as important as doing the right thing. 4-7

Dog Days at School
(by Kelly DiPucchio/ Brian Biggs, Hyperion $16.99 Score:)

Charlie does not like school. In fact one Sunday night he wishes that he could be a like his dog, Norman. What follows next is a mostly amusing Kafka-for-kids fantasy that speaks to the old adage, be careful what you wish for. After days go by with the two trading places, Charlie comes to understand this. 4-7

2014 Awards
Flip Flap Farm
(by Axel Scheffler, Candlewick $11.99 Score:)

With split pages that can be flipped to match top and bottom views that create a whole animal or combine the top of one and bottom of another, this is a playful book. Half the name of the animal is on top and the other half on the bottom. When pages are mixed, the new mixed up animal takes on an original name. There are amusing rhymes about all the creatures that add to the fun. Call it a matching game or have even more fun mismatching the animals. 3-7

2014 Award
Beneath the Sun
(by Melissa Stewart/ illus. Constance Bergum, Charlesbridge $16.99 Score:)

A handsome and informative young science book that explains how the animals deal with the heat of summer days. How the spittlebug stays cool by squirting out a froth of white goo and nestles down inside the bubbles hidden in the leaves. It shows us animals in the desert, in the meadow, in the sea all have their special ways of dealing with the sun. Handsome illustrations add much. 4-8
