Come On, Let's Go!
(Susie Tallman, Rock Me Baby Records $15.99 Score:)

Each of the classic songs is produced with a small "story" that is either danced or illustrated with animated images and sung by Susie Tallman. The collection is made up largely of familiar songs such as Puff the Magic Dragon. Fie Little Ducks, I've Been Working on the Railroad and other such favorites. They are no over done, yet there is just enough action to entertain. The opening number, Let's Go is probably our least favorite and some kids may not like the "clown" type fellow in high hat and funny makeup who recites some nonsense verses, but you can just skip over the ones you don't love. All in all this is a good music DVD for preschoolers. 3 & up.

Age: Preschool, Early School Years. Award Year: 2010.

Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! & more stories by Mo Willems
(Mo Willems, Scholastic $19.99 Score:)

Mo Willems not only creates wonderfully amusing stories, he obviously enjoys narrating them in his own voice. Willems, with some help from friends such as Jon Scieszka, Mo's daughter Trixie, and Knuffle Bunny narrate three of his stories and his familiar line art comes alive through delightful animation and some jazzy music. You can choose an interactive version that invites kids to chime in as the story is told or not. For beginning readers, you can also choose subtitles, so they can read along. Three favorites are featured on this DVD: the title story, Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus!, Knuffle Bunny: A Cautionary Tale, Leaonardo, the Terrible Monster.

2010 Award
Hooray for Fish!
(by Lucy Cousins, Candlewick $9.99 Score:)

An animated DVD comes packaged with this oversized picture book that is all about fish. Told in verse, with Lucy Cousin's usual passion for color, the exuberant illustrations dance through the pages and DVD. This is more about the sound of rhyming words and amusing illustrations than a true concept book about fish. It is not young science, but it is delicious to look at. The narrator has a decidedly English accent that may be a tad strange to young American audiences. Still, this is right on the mark for 2 1/2 and up.

Age: Toddlers, Preschool. Award Year: 2010. Click here to purchase the product on Amazon.com.

2010 Award
Storybook Treasures, Giggle, Giggle, Quack
(Scholastic $14.99 Score:)

Newest of the Storybook Treasures collection, Giggle Giggle Quack is the comic lead story on this DVD with five stories. When Farmer Brown goes on vacation he leaves the farm in the hands of his brother Bob. Poor Bob, had no idea what he was getting into with Duck and his mischievous friends. In Duck For President, good old Duck is up to his usual tricks. He does not like the way things are going on the farm and tries to take charge. Doodby Dooby Moo involves a talent show the farm animals get into with some laughable moments. Diary of a Fly and Diary of a Worm both give kids a different perspective on how the world works when you are living under ground or on the wing. Kids can just watch and listen or read along. Both Giggle Giggle and Duck for President are also done in Spanish and there is an interview with Harry Bliss, author of the Diaries. They say 3-8, we'd say more like 4 & up.

Age: Preschool, Early School Years. Award Year: 2010. Click here to purchase the product on Amazon.com.

2009 Award
Shaun the Sheep, Back in the Ba-a-ath
(HIT Entertaiment $14.95 Score:)

From the creators of the award-winning Wallace & Gromit series, comes a seriously wacky collection of stories about a flock of mischievous sheep, a rather stupid farmer, his sheepdog Blitzer, and some naughty sheep on the other side of the fence. There are eight amusing stories; our favorites are Still Life with the farmer leaving a half finished painting and the sheep taking over and doing a series of paintings based on well known artworks redone in sheep's clothes and Take Away, a pizza buying extravaganza that will have you laughing out loud. In fact, each of the stories is entertaining without the usual frenetic cartoon pace. Done in stop action animation, the dialogue is little more than a series of grunts and baas, but the stories are told with wit and wooly good fun. Less sophisticated and younger in feeling than the Wallace & Gromit, they will be enjoyed by your whole family.  Running time 51 minutes.

Age: Preschool, Early School Years. Award Year: 2009. Click here to purchase the product on Amazon.com.
