2012 Award
Creeper Sleepers
(North American Bear Co. $18 Score:)

Choose a white kitten in pink pajamas, a tan puppy in blue pajamas, or a white bunny in green jammies. We happen to think the bunny is the cutest of the trio, though it is much less green than it appears to be in the photo. These 13-inch dolls have a jolly jingle inside and are totally soft and silky to the touch. All stitched features and non-removable clothing. Baby safe and machine washable.

Age: Infants, Toddlers. Award Year: 2012. Click here to purchase the product on Amazon.com.

2012 Awards
Hape Ring-Around-A-Rosy
(HaPe $45 Score:)

A classic toy for developing dexterity as well as imagination. Toddlers love sliding the colorful beads over the maze of wires. Safely tethered, the colored beads and rings are fun to move up, up, up and see them slip and slide down. This is a good manipulative plaything. Children often turn the beads into cars, people, animals or whatever they choose to imagine as they move them up and over. It's also a great plaything that opens the way to color names, sizes (the beads are of differing sizes) and even simple counting. There are ten beads on each of the maze wires. 24 months & up.

SNAP: Use this for developing fine motor skills as well as counting and color concepts.

Age: Toddlers, Preschool. Award Year: 2012. Click here to purchase the product on Amazon.com.

2012 Award
Hape Countdown Wire Maze
(HaPe $39.99 Score:)

A classic bead maze that will get a lot of action. This is a smaller version than the Ring-around-a-Posy version with five wires. This one has just three wires that twist and turn and fewer beads. That said, it is probably a better choice for younger toddlers. There are big, medium and smaller beads for little hands to spin and turn over the colorful wires. Safely tethered, they give kids the chance to handle small beads that would otherwise be off limits. A classic plaything that develops fine motor skills, imagination, color concepts and even counting. 24 months & up.

Soft and cuddly, this is an armful that a toddler will enjoy. A few tufts of hair come either in brunette or blonde yarn. Made of short, non-shedding plush it feels like velour to the touch. 2012 Award
Baby Long Legs Bunny
(North American Bear Co. $28 Score:)

A lovely combination of knit and plush that is totally on the mark for toddlers who like a big but light enough huggable to drag about. These huggables are 18-inches long. The photo of this soft cuddly doll with long legs and arms and floppy ears does not really convey just how cute this doll is. The legs are not rigid or wired, but soft and easy for little ones to grasp. The features are stitched and baby safe. There is a grey elephant version as well as a pink mouse. We happen to love the bunny and see the new black and white Puppy in the same line. Also adorable, Baby Long Legs Squeakers, Bunnies, Elephants, Puppy and Pink Mouse ($12.99 each) in this line that are 8-inch miniatures of the bigger dolls.   Baby safe and machine washable. All ages.

2012 Award
Blabla Giant Charles Lion
(blabla kids $180 Score:)

Three feet tall, Charles is truly a giant in Toyland. Knitted of cotton yarn he is soft and huggable and will make a decorative centerpiece of any child's room. But more than that, he is apt to play a big role in a child's pretend play. With his orange whiskers, happy grin, long green tail with orange tufts, and brown shaggy yarn mane, Charles is a friendly sort of lion with big blue eyes and striped trousers. This is the kind of memorable plaything that listens well and says only what a child imagines it can say. The smaller doll pictured does not come with Charles. Blabla makes many smaller and less pricey dolls that are equally charming. Handmade in Peru, these dolls capture the affection and imagination at first glance. All ages.

Age: Toddlers, Preschool. Award Year: 2012.

2012 Award
Tots Art Start
(Alex $16 Score:)

A collection of art supplies, chosen for young preschoolers. No glue or scissors are needed. There are no lines to color inside of, nor designs to copy. There are two colorful frames with a sticky background on which children can put pieces of flat, shredded, or fringed tissue paper, patterned stickers, and doilies. All of these are supplied in the package. There are four other non-sticky frames, two with white backgrounds, one shaped like a tree; another shaped like a horse. This is an open-ended kit that also includes three triangular shaped crayons. The latter are faint unless used on one of the points of the triangle. All the materials are ready for experimenting with making collages. Marked 18 months and up. We'd say that may be rushing it a bit for most toddlers. Once you start using this you may want to start a collage box of your own for further exploration.
