2009 Award
Eleanor, Quiet No More
(by Doreen Rappaport/ ilus. by Gary Kelley, Hyperion $ Score:)

Once again Doreen Rappaport has told young readers the life of an important American by combining her finely crafted narrative with real quotes that give emphasis to the big idea on each two page spread. Handsome illustrations follow the main events in Eleanor Roosevelt's life, from girlhood to First Lady of the World. Like Rappaport's Martin's Big Words: The Life of Martin Luther King Jr., this is a gem for young history buffs. 8 & up.

2009 Award
Black Beauty
(retold by Sharon Lerner/ illus by Susan Jeffers, Random House $ Score:)

A classic tale told in a shorter but beautifully crafted version that is more child friendly for young listeners and readers. The horse, Black Beauty, goes through a series of great misfortunes as he is sold from one family and business to another. Although he is not well treated he never loses heart and does what is asked of him. As usual, Susan Jeffers art captures the timepiece of this old story by Anna Sewell. The painterly illustrations are full of texture and lyrical beauty. 7 & up.
