My Somebody Special
(by Sarah Weeks/ illus. by Ashley Wolff, Harcourt $16 Score:) What child has not waited for that somebody special to arrive at daycare or nursery school at the end of the day? As each little one is picked up, a question is asked about who has the roundest eyes, the sweetest nose, perfect toes or some other unique physical attribute and is answered with a repeated refrain, "Mine are. Mine are. Mine!" It is not the words, but the joyful reunions that young listeners will find reassuring. Ashley Wolff's charming parent and child pairs are animals with humanoid clothing and feelings that register all the exuberance that comes at the end of their separations each day. Most especially, children will identify with the worried little pup who is the last to be picked up - a fate that most children will experience at one time or another.

Age: Toddlers,Preschool. Award Year: 2002.
