2013 Award
Creativity for Kids Creepy Bugs Window Art
(Creativity for Kids $16.99 Score:)

Use the colorful glue and patterns to make ten creepy bugs that will stick to the window after they dry and are peeled off the patterns. Kids can follow the patterns or do their own buggy drawings. These will be fun to make for Halloween decorations. Making the stickers involves following a pattern and eye-hand control that kids also need for writing. Easy to peel off the window when the buggy things lose their charm. Check other Window Art sets from this company for other seasons. 6 & up

Age: Early School Years. Award Year: 2013.

2013 Awards
Creativity for Kids Grow a Hedgehog
(Creativity for Kids $12 Score:)

Paint the plastic hedgehog planter, paste on the wiggly eyes and bow. Now, you are ready to grow a hedgehog! Add and fill the planter tray with the supplied potting mix. Plant the seeds and keep them moist with the spray bottle until the wheatgrass seeds sprout in 3-5 days. A little art, a little science, and a lot of learning fun. Be forewarned: the box shows the hedgehog's face blushed with yellow, but there is no yellow in the kit. It comes with white, tan and black paint. Perhaps you can use a yellow marker to add this detail. 5 & up.

SNAP: Keep a photo journal of the process with your child in the pictures. Turn them into a small book that tells about each stage. This kind of activity builds reading and pre-reading skills and puts the child in the center of the action.

Creativity For Kids Color Cord Bracelets
(Creativity for Kids $19.99 Score:)

This craft kit involves macrame-type weaving with thick color cords that produce showy results that kids can enjoy wearing with pride. It comes with eight colors, buckles, stickers, scissors, glue, and clear instructions. There are enough supplies to make eight bracelets. A fun kit for play dates or sleep-over craft fun. Marked for 7 & up, but we think most kids of seven will need lots of help getting started and finishing up. We'd say it's a better choice for 8-9's.

2013 Award
Manhattan Toy Groovy Girls Sparkletastic Jewelry
(Manhattan Toy $18 Score:)

All the makings for three bracelets, three pendants, gems, glitter, a work mat and cords come in this craft kit for true beginners. Aside from the glitter, which will need supervising, the gems shake out of a cleverly-designed container and stick to the pre-adhesived bracelets and necklaces. There is no glue or need for fine motor skills. This makes for nicely finished jewelry that girls will enjoy wearing. Marked for 3 and up. We think this will be a better choice for 4's and 5's, who will still need help with the necklace laces and keeping the glitter from spreading all over.
