2011 Award
Kids Preferred Lolly Pop Squeaker Stick Rattles
(Kids Preferred $8 Score:)

Fabric rattles with bright graphics with licks of black and white patterns that have a lot of eye appeal. Shaped like lolly pops the tops of some have a single colorful image such as a big yellow and black bumblebee or a polka-dotted butterfly with crinkles in its wings. Others have a photo of a baby's face--take your pick. All of them have a rattle sound and quiet, non-startling squealer in the handle. The reverse side of each has a small unbreakable reflective mirror. Though the handle is fat for little hands, it is squish-able. Best of all it's soft enough for babies to grasp and shake and not bop themselves before they have full control of their hand movements. Infants and up. The company has signed a verification form complying with our safety requirements. We did not independently test this toy in a lab.

Later their ribbon trimmed bodies will be interesting for little fingers to explore. They used satin and ribbed grosgrain ribbons along with felt fabric feet, wings, and arms.

2010 Award
Manhattan Toy Little Bloom Kiku Kitty
(Manhattan Toy $15.99 Score:)

This colorful Kiku Kitty with teethers on her feet, a see-thru ring rattle on her hand and a tiny mirror on her pocket is also one you can hang on its Velcro strap on to the stroller. But put Kiku in easy reach, since she has lots of do-dads, textures and chewy parts to explore. Also in the Little Bloom line you'll find several excellent small toys worth considering. A Petite Petals Wrist Rattle attaches with velcro to baby's wrist or ankle. The big flower with a polka-dotted center and petals has a lot of visual and tactile interest. Each petal is a different fabric: cotton, plush, satin and each has its own pattern. A small toy with hours of playtime if your baby likes wearing it. Some babies ado not. So this is a maybe yes/maybe no kind of choice. Also in the same line a classic dumbbell shaped rattle. Done of many textures and patterns, this is a good choice for early tracking games. It is soft enough for baby to explore, even before those jerky hand movements smooth out. However the center of the dumbbell is pretty thick for little hands to grab. This may be a better lap toy for socializing baby than one for solo play. In the same line, the Flowering Fan has teethers at both ends of a fan shape of fabric. It has knotties to finger, satin, fleece and cotton and ribbon tags, too. This is a small but excellent little take along for distractions - especially for babies who are teething. 2009 Award
Sassy Click Clack Keys
(Sassy $4 Score:)

Okay, we both know that this will not substitute for the real thing. Why is it babies love real car keys better than any pretend sets ever made?  Still, this is a fun set of three so-called keys. They are fuchsia, green, and lime disks with key shapes pressed into plastic that will clack and taste terrific, since there are raised dots on them for sore gums. The three so-called disks are attached to a ring with a black and white sound device. There are three ball shaped buttons that make the sounds of an engine starting up and horns. Marked 3 months & up, we think a little older is right.

Sassy Go-Go Bugs
(Sassy $10 Score:)

Wrap these three colorful bugs on the arm of the car carrier. Each has a distinctive sound without being intrusive. There are licks of high contrast black and white dots and stripes for eye-catching appeal above the lavender butterfly, the back and yellow bumble bee and the big red and black dotted ladybug. Baby will be gazing at these long before they can reach out and touch the satiny wings on the swinging bugs with stitched on features. You can reposition the bugs with their adjustable straps so that they appear in different locations from time to time. Keep in mind that baby stops noticing things that are always in the same place, so being able to move them is a real plus. Newborn & up.
