2011 Award
Manhattan Toy Dave Dimetrodon Puppet

Get ready for a whole lot of growling when this oversized soft puppet is unleashed for action. It has a blue ruff on its head, a bright yellow face with green freckles and a huge red mouth that opens to revel a row of razor sharp teeth ( not really sharp--they just look that way.) He has big scary eyes half covered in the yellow face. Down his back is a mane of creamy long hair and a metallic chin and neck that will cover a good sized arm. Pair this with any other puppets or bring home the other colorful dinos in their line, such as Trip Triceratops or the fearsome Peter Pteranodon.

2011 Award
Creativity for Little Kids Finger Puppet Theater
(Creativity for Kids $19.99 Score:)

Finger puppets are fun to use and great for on the go pretend play.  This activity set comes with six finger puppet forms (made of felt) and all ready to be decorated with smaller pre-cut pieces of felt, sequins and the all important wiggly eyes. What makes this accessible for older preschoolers is that the smaller pieces are self-adhesive- making this a project they can do, not just watch!  The craft glue is needed for attaching the pom-poms, the sequins, the flowers and the bows. The stage itself is not particularly sturdy-it's made of cardboard--but it's not the type of stage you'll have forever.  The set is more about making the puppets!

Age: Preschool, Early School Years. Award Year: 2011. Click here to purchase the product on Amazon.com.

2010 Award
Manhattan Wildlife Collection Warren Walrus Puppet
(Manhattan Toy $19.99 Score:)

I am the Walrus--CooCoo Kachoo! And what a walrus Warren is! He's all wrinkly and velvety dark brown with blue-grey mouth and two white tusks. The details on this big 13" puppet are marvelous. His eyes are set into the tan fabric with pockets of white lower eye lids that give him a special look. Above his mouth he has wonderful black whiskers and a dark black snout. A little hand will fit easily inside the whole body puppet with elongated body and flippers. This can be used for dramatic play and storytelling with or by kids 3-33 and up.

2010 Award
Manhattan Toy Dogzillies Hand Puppets
(Manhattan Toy $16 Score:)

It's a hard choice between Benny Bulldog, Larry Labrador and Harry Husky. The latter looks a bit like a wolf, that might be a plus when a villainous character is needed. These have arms that droop down, but only motion is in the pooches' mouths. These are good sized puppets with a very animated look when you move their snouts. 4 & up. 2009 Awards
Jungle Snugglies Puppets: Louis Lion and Zeke Zebra
(Manhattan Toy $12 Score:)

This orange Louis Lion with brown felt mane and bright red nose is the cutest of the jungle group. All of them have ribbon tails of satin as well as stitched safe features. Most also have licks of satin trim as well as felt fringes for sensory feedback. There is a black and white zebra with black mane, an orange and black tiger, and a tan monkey with pink ears and muzzle. All of these are good tracking puppets for playing with babies as well as being small enough for young siblings to use with ease for playing with or with out the baby. We pass on the elephant and giraffe that have tufts of fuzz on their heads as these would not be good for babies who mouth things.

Age: Toddlers, Preschool, Early School Years. Award Year: 2009. Click here to purchase the product on Amazon.com.

2009 Award
FlipFlaps Puppets: Turvy Dragonfly, Tipsy Butterfly and Tosy Hummingbird
(Manhattan Toy $16 Score:)

This image doesn't do the product justice. Among the cutest hand puppets of the season! There's a green Flipflaps Turvy Dragonfly with wide iridescent lavender wings. Or look for the Tipsy Butterfly, red with lavender head and wide bright yellow wings etched in purple. We also love the Tosy Hummingbird in teal blue with golden body, tail feathers, and beak. Any one of these is a winner! 3 & up.This company has signed a verification form complying with our safety requirements. We did not independently test this toy in a lab.
