2012 Award
American Girl Bitty Twins Multicultural Collection
(American Girl $95 Score:)

One of best collections of multicultural dolls ever. We are also thrilled that there are boy dolls (often very hard to find) included in this updated collection of twin dolls that include Caucasian, African American, Hispanic, Asian sets of twins. The attention to detail for these contemporary twins is nothing less than you would expect from American Girl. You can select your own twins on line- also very clever. New for this season, new clothes for the dolls and matching clothes for kids.

2008 Award
Fur Real Friends Biscuit My Lovin Pup
(Hasbro $199 Score:) We love Biscuit. It's really that simple. He's a 24" tall pup with golden hair. We know he's not real but his facial expression are amazingly cute and dog like (in that perfect animatronic kind of way). As gushy as this review is sounding, we should note that Biscuit also does several tricks (via voice recognition). He can sit, lie down, shake your hand, wag his tag, bark-- of course he doesn't always do it right, which is also very puppy like. We suppose a stricter toy reviewer would give low marks for functionality--but it just made us all love him more. We do wish that Biscuit wasn't so pricey and that he did not run on 6 D batteries (you do have to turn him off or you'll be spending a small fortune on batteries)- but he's really very special in the novelty dog category. He doesn't walk, but he is very huggable and may do the trick if a real dog is not a possibility. The smaller Fur Real Tumbles (he rolls over) is just not as good. The internal mechanism that makes it possible for him to roll over takes away from his huggability-his fur is also not as nice as Biscuit's. For a smaller dog, at a lower price- look at last year's Lucky, the Incredible Wonder Dog from Zizzle.

2009 Award
Maru Doll
(Maru and Friends $99 Score:)

Maru is a very beautiful Hispanic doll with dark eyes, dark hair and fine features. She looks like a collector's doll with a face that looks like a bisque doll from another time. Her clothes are colorful, a pleated cordoroy skirt, orange blouse and hat and a cute vest with orange bows. She wears fleece topped boots and tights. She's about the same size as an American Girl doll. But her body is not soft. Her arms and legs move, but she is less flexible than some of the play dolls that look like American Girl wanna-be's. The book that comes with Maru is not really of the same quality as the doll. The book is a totally forgettable. We also question the age on the box. They say 3 & up. This is a doll for 5's and up, up, up. It wold be a total waste for 3's who would not be able to handle her clothes. So this is a mixed bag. Available on their site, maru.com, where you will find two other dolls, a blonde and a doll with wavy hair.

Age: Early School Years, Later School Years. Award Year: 2009.

Les Deglingos
(All New Materials $40 Score:)

An all new look in huggables, the Deglingos are made of patterned cotton knits, wide ribbed corduroy, fuzzy plush, and felt trims. The collection includes a rabbit, hound dog, cat, hedgehog, rat, cow, and sheep. They have a zany look that is likely to appeal to 'tweens as much as younger kids. 3 & up.

2009 Award
Go! Go! Sports Girls
(Dream Big Toy Co. $22.99 Score:)

These sports minded dolls are all done up in outfits for such active play as softball, swimming, dancing, soccer, and tennis. Each has its own accessory that goes with the sport. The soft fabric dolls have yarn hair, stitched features and come in multi-cultural skin tones. They are a little bigger than the Groovy Girls—sort of like older cousins. We applaud the concept of promoting athletics for girls in their dramatic play. They are cuter in person than their photos on line. 3 & up. The company has signed a verification form complying with our safety requirements. We did not independently test this toy in a lab.

Age: Preschool, Early School Years. Award Year: 2009. Click here to purchase the product on Amazon.com.

All three of these new adorable Groovy Girl Mermaids are done in fabric with glitzy velvety mermaid tails with sparkling or satin trims. Open the tail and abracadabra! Two legs! Fold the tail into itself. Hard to choose a favorite, they are all so special. 3 & up.

2009 Award
Dressable Madeline
(Kids Preferred $30 Score:)

Welcome back, Madeline! From time to time this storybook character exits for a season or two and then happily resurfaces. This season she is back in a all her classic glory. This all fabric doll with her red hair, her bright yellow hat and blue velour coat, plaid school girl dress and black shoes is ready to be dressed and undressed. Oh, yes, she has her requisite appendix scar. Bring her home with one or more of the books or the many videos with Christopher Plummer narrating. Also new this season, a 70th Anniversary version of Madeline in a toile print dress. We think this version will be of more interest to collectors. We prefer the classic Madeline in coat and hat. 4 & up. The company has signed a verification form complying with our safety requirements. We did not independently test this toy in a lab.
