The Witch's Walking Stick

Meddaugh takes familiar fantasy material and makes it fresh with her own brand of humor. Her art and wit make her a worthy successor to William Steig. 5 & up.

Because Your Daddy Loves You
(by Andrew Clements/illus. by R.W. Alley, Clarion $16 Score:) How refreshing! A Daddy book that follows a patient and loving daddy through the day. Dad avoids saying the typical critical remarks, but Clements has it both ways; he says what the daddy didn’t say and then what he really does say as he kindly makes a day at the beach a happy time together. In a way, Clements models some great parenting strategies along with a pleasing story. 3–5.
