2005 Award
Tutti Frutti Safety Pin Bracelet
(Fashion Angels Enterprises $5.4 Score:) Our eleven, ten, and nine year old testers were thrilled with the results of this small kit that includes colored safety pins, beads, elastic and clear directions for making a very pleasing bracelet. Given the price, this kit would make a great activity for a craft/slumber party. Younger girls will need adult help.

Age: Later School Years. Award Year: 2005.

2005 Award
Scrapbook and Memory Box Gift Set
(Creativity for Kids $28.99 Score:) Scrapbook fans are going to love this commodious box with picture-frame cover, which holds a spiral-bound scrapbook plus 16 sheets of patterned paper, stickers, stencil, scalloped scissors, paper punch, stamper, pens, glue stick and great ideas. This will appeal to older girls ready to memorialize a school year, a trip or a big event. Marked 7 & up, but was coved by our 10 and 11 year old testers. The Groovy Girls Perfectly Picturific Scrapbook Kit will appeal to younger girls who play with Groovy Girl dolls. The hardcover scrapbooks made these two Creativity for Kids kits preferable to the Alex My Scrapbook, that comes with a soft-covered spiral. For less experienced and younger scrapbookers, see the review of the new for 2007, My Scrapbook Case (Alex).

Ceramic Allowance Bank
(Creativity for Kids $14.99 Score:) A chubby white ceramic pig ready to paint and hold spare change or allowance. It has an easy-to-pull-out rubber stopper, so they don’t need to break the bank when they want to spend some of their savings! Includes a “chores” booklet with star stickers… the idea being that they earn their allowance. We have mixed feelings about paying kids for chores… but we do like the idea of encouraging them to save their pennies, nickels, and dimes! Also new from the ceramic line, Le Most Petite Purses ($15.99 ) comes with three different small ceramic purses, paint, and rhinestones. Our testers thought these would make great gifts for mom or a decoration for their own vanity. 7 & up.

2005 Award
Fashion Angels
(Fashion Angels Enterprises $24.99 Score:) Our 9- and 11-year-old testers worked seriously to make original costumes for the set of four super-sized fashion angels that come in a kit with fabric, patterns, glitter, trims, and glue for making very cool outfits. Sturdier than paper dolls, players need dexterity, patience, and the ability to deal with details. 8 & up. Slightly easier and more flexible, Groovy Girls Design Studio Woodkins (Pamela Drake $19.99) comes with one "woodkin" style doll with wooden frame that lifts and closes down to hold the fabric and trims. It comes with scissors, glitter, stickers, and lots of details for designing special outfits that are easy to keep changing. 8 & up.

Age: Later School Years. Award Year: 2005.

2006 Award
Watch It!
(Alex $24.95 Score:) Technically not much of a craft kit, but this watch kit was a HUGE hit with our testers. The kit comes with a watch and seven different colorful ribbon bands (very J Crew). Would make a great birthday/holiday present. Surprisingly our teen testers really wanted their own set.

2007 Award
Cast and Paint: Krazy Kars
(Skullduggery $16 Score:)

“Let’s do another,” and “so neat”—our testers really liked these fun model kits that are easy to do and produce Hot Wheels/Matchbox-scaled cars. Sets come with enough modeling material for four cars (but enough decorations for two). The cars take 30 minutes to set. New kits feature NASCAR winners like Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson. Kits come with NASCAR decals, paint, and blo-pens (not our favorites), but our testers really were less concerned with the decorating and more intent on making a toy they could really use!

The company has signed a verification form complying with our safety requirements. We did not independently test this toy in a lab.

2007 Award
Monster Trucks Custom Shop
(Creativity for Kids $24.99 Score:)

Customize the four monster trucks with paint and stickers, then let ’em rip! With pull-back mechanisms, these are ready for racing. The stickers go on well. The paint isn’t great, but really is beside the point. These four monster trucks are just FUN! For smaller vehicles, check out Fast Car Race Cars ($14.99 4). Set of three wooden cars with pull-back mechanisms to paint (our kids used markers to play with the cars sooner). With either the trucks or the cars, set up a roadway with some empty small boxes for simulated crashes and road races. (800) 311-8684. Let’s go to the races! We often complain that there are not a lot of great craft kits for boys. Here are three sets that will be a hit.

2007 Award
JellLoopdeLoops Sparkle Jelly Jewelry Kit
(Fashion Angels Enterprises $14.99 Score:) Our testers really enjoyed this kit with 48' of glitter tubing so that crafters can make 36 bracelets and 20 rings. One parent noted: “love the creativity factor and including the pliers was an excellent idea”, but thought the seed beads were too tiny to manage. 8 & up. (800) 492-3237.

Age: Later School Years. Award Year: 2007.

Scratch Art Light Catcher Fun Kits
(Scratch-Art Co. $2.99 Score:)

Kids scratch away the black paint to give the open spaces a stained glass look when the finished product is hung on a window (themes include birds, flowers, and a sailboat). Quick, pleasing projects that are a good party favor/activity. Also new, Scratch Magic Stickers ($5.99 ) comes in 20 animal shapes. For a bigger kit, Draw & Learn Deluxe Kit ($16.99 ) has over 50 stencil shapes of dinosaurs, underwater, jungle, and outer space themes. This just might attract boys in particular who often need to develop the fine motor skills of holding a pencil—without the challenge of writing letters.

Weaving Fashion Weaving Loom
(Alex $18 Score:)

Cleverly packaged with very current chunky, fluffy yarn, this kit gives weaving an updated look. Our testers gave high ratings to both this kit and the Giant Weaving Loom ($29.99 4). Must be threaded, but easy to use.
