2010 Award
Lego Star Wars Collection
(Lego Systems, Inc. $19.99 Score:)

The number one requested LEGO sets from our testers continues to be STAR WARS. There is a set for every budget. Top-ratings went to the Freeco Speeder (177pieces) ages 7-12., the Droid Tri-fighter (268pieces) ages 7-12  and the larger ARC-170 Starfighter (396 pieces) ages 8-14.  Yes, this is an exception to our non-violence rule. It's fantasy--good prevails--we're ok with it.

more details from our reviewers:

For the Droid-Tri-Fighter our 9 year old tester thought the design was great, really accurate (but he feels that this is true of the LEGO Star Wars line in general).  He felt it was more structurally sound than many of his other Star Wars models. There weren't too many cool features but he did like that you could put hte action figure into the center ball like space. "The clear ball in which you can put a figure connects with the normal Lego connection, so opening and shutting it is a pain. I would have expected a hinge-like apparatus as most enclosures on Lego Star Wars vehicles have." Our parent tester thought that kids beyond 9 would not be too interested in this particular model--because there weren't may gadgets.

Our 7-year old builder took on the Freeco Speeder and was able to do this set independently--a feat that pleased both our tester and his mom. "This does have a hinge-like apparatus to open and shut the round cover over the driver. The hinge (bar) makes it easy to put figures in and take them out. The 2 figures that came with this, Anakin Skywalker and Thi-Sen, were very popular, especially Anakin. This really seems to make a difference, especially for a 7-yr-old.

This too feels much stronger than most Star Wars vehicles, it doesn't feel like it will fall apart if you drop it. It has interesting and accurate details like the ski-like parts on the bottom, but it should be noted that the picture on the box leads you to believe that this vehicle has shooting things, or shooting capabilities, when it does not. And other than the ski-like things on the bottom, and the clear cover on the top, this vehicle has no moving parts."

2009 Award
Lego City Corner
(Lego Systems, Inc. $59.99 Score:)

Just as the name suggests, this mid sized set comes with several buildings: a two story pizza parlor, a bike and skate board repair shop, a bus stop, and a charming yellow bus with large see-through European-style windows, red seats, a driver and folks in the shops who can get on board to go home. There are street lights, bikes, skateboards, fire hydrant and other such details of a city corner. This is part of Lego’s modular City theme. Set includes 483 pieces and is suggested for kids 5-12. Kids may need help in getting started. They need to work on one main piece at a time instead of emptying all the pieces and ending up with a mish-mosh! A lot of learning comes from the process, not just focusing on the end product. Be there to assist, but don't take over. A kit this size will take more than a day to build. Learning about taking time and problem solving is part of the learning process. So is stick-to-itivness. Parents can act as consultants, not buildes. If it is too hard for your child, put the set away for a while. Start with simpler building projects and reintroduce this one a few months from now. Only the most experienced 5 year old builder will be able to do this set. Note, the box says 5-12.

Lego Pirates Brickbeard Bounty Ship
(Lego Systems, Inc. $99.95 Score:)

Our testers loved this set complete with shark, treasure and a whole cast of pirates! With 592 pieces, your younger builder will need assistance – but produces a really satisfying build. The ship is 22 inches long and comes with five sails. There is a projectile for which we are making an exception to the rule. 6-12.

2009 Award
Plan Toys Build N Spin
(Plan Toys $75 Score:)

Instead of a ball run, this wonderful building set comes with several spinning "rollers" that will glide down the ramps and curves that can be arranged in many different roadways. This is an open-ended building set that challenges kids problem solving skills, their eye hand coordination as well as their spatial visual skills and imagination. Made of chemical free rubberwood, the set has 36 pieces in natural and colored pieces. They say 4 & up. We think 4's will need some help in learning how to construct a run. We know slightly older kids will enjoy building all sorts of constructions with this handsome set.

2009 Award
Citiblocs 100 piece set
(Citiblocs $27 Score:)

These wooden blocks look like the much pricier original French, Kapla blocks. Compatible with the originals, they are all the same size pieces of natural wood.  The open-endedness of these blocks truly  challenges the builder's imagination and dexterity. The smooth and precision cut blocks are made of Radiata Pine from certified renewable forests in New Zealand and come packaged with suggested projects kids can build without glue or pegs. Also new this season, colored Citiblocs. These make interesting patterns and may hold added appeal to some young builders.  A 54 piece set is $17 and can be used for adding accents or on its own. We like the basic blocks in natural color for starters.  The packages say 3 & up, we think older builders of 5 & up will find them more interesting.  The activities suggested will challenge even older kids.  Our recommendation--put them on the coffee table and see what everyone, young and old, comes up with.  We found them addictive.

Soccer Champion Challenge
(Lego Systems, Inc. $49.99 Score:)

Kids build a soccer field and let the games begin! This 274-piece set becomes a game with mini-players that can kick and goalies that move. 7 & up. You can add to the fun with a Fans Grandstand with scoreboard ($19.99) and a Team Transport vehicle ($29.99).  This toy has been discontinued.

Our testers also gave these sets top ratings: For a simpler set consider the 110 piece Fire Fighters' Lift Truck ($19.99). Testers also liked the Polar Base ($59.99) with control tower, helicopter, snow tracker, and polar bears, too.

Frigits Deluxe
(Think of It! $29.99 Score:) You'll want this on the fridge door! It's great fun to discover the many ways to arrange the magnetic shoots, wheels, and spinners so that the marbles drop into the catch box. 7 & up. SNAP INFO: Kids who might not be able to get down on the floor to make a marble run can do this in a wheelchair at the refrigerator door! It's great fun to discover the many ways to arrange the magnetic chutes, wheels, and spinners so that the marbles drop into the catch box. Marbles do fall off easily while the run is being constructed, so have a large supply of extra marbles on hand..
