Works of Ahhh Animals
(Balitono $7.99 Score:) Kit comes with a single wooden animal (triceratops, dolphin, horse, penguin), paints and a brush. These are charming kits that will be enjoyed in different ways depending on the age of the artist. Younger painters will paint quickly and then have a great animal to add to their block play. Older painters will take pleasure in taking their time and then having something to display. One tester also thought the penguin was great for a school project.

Decoupage Diva Tray
(Creativity for Kids $22.95 Score:)

Learning the technique of decoupage is made simple with this kit, which includes a white wooden 17" ✕ 12" tray, with fold-out legs, a precut hole that holds a cup, two sheets of pastel-related art to cut out and paste, glaze, scissors, a foam brush, glitter glue, and gem stones. Older kids like to work on projects that give them a finished product they can use. There is no right or wrong way, yet kids end up with a breakfast tray or writing desk that will be all the more fun to use, since they designed it. May need adult assistance to get started. 7 & up.

Magical drawing experiences when these color surge markers touch down on the brilliantly colored double-sided paper. The colors brighten up as you draw and turn colors as one marker glides over an earlier line. Sets come with 8 or more markers and 20 or more sheets. This makes a great open-ended travel toy or a good choice for some non-messy creative time for a play date. Take it to Grams--chances are she will want to try it! 5 & up.

The company has signed a verification form complying with our safety requirements. We did not independently test this toy in a lab. SNAP ACTIVITY: Use these magical markers and paper to encourage kids to practice writing their names and turn the finished work into signs for the door to her room or cover of his notebook. 2009 Award
Elia Mini Chair
(Elia Fun $29.99 Score:)

We've seen a lot of cardboard furniture in the past, but we were attracted to this chair (designed by an architect). They have a very modern clean look and our testers loved that they can hold up to 200 pounds! Our testers had their older siblings take a seat - putting the chair through its paces. This completely recyclable project also got high marks for being reversible so that there were two decorating opportunities. You can use the included big stickers (think Marimekko inspired)...or you can use your own materials to decorate. Lots of fun...a table is in the works.

Creativity for Kids Shrinky Dinks Deluxe
(Creativity for Kids $24.95 Score:)

Here is a super size set of 60 genuine Shrinky Dinks with to turn into all kinds of accessories. The kit comes with 10 sheets of Shrinky Dinks to make charm bracelets, gift tags, jewelry, hair clips and keys chains. Crafters will find cord, gift cards, 8 color pencils, sharpener, and hole punch to make their designs. These are fun to color. Then an adult bakes them and abracadabra...they shrink! A plentiful supply for parties, play dates or solo quiet times. We gave this a scientific lead. Talk about how they change and what makes them shrink. Can they think of other things that change when heat is added? What happens to food such as cakes or cookies? How about a sweater that goes into the hot dryer by mistake? Adult supervision is a must when the oven is in use. We'll say it again...ADULT SUPERVISION NEEDED!. The company has signed a verification form complying with our safety requirements.  We did not independently test this toy in a lab.  7 & up.

These come glazed in white with metal rims, hinges and clasps. Kids can paint and either bake them or simply leave them for a week to lock the colors. Since these have more details to paint than most, they are a better choice for older painters with the dexterity for fine details.
