2006 Award
Comfy Chic Flip Flops
(Creativity for Kids $17.99 Score:) Set comes with two pairs of flip flops (sizes 11-2 and 4-7). The project is fun to do. One set comes with chenille yarn, the other with confetti ribbon that you simply wrap around the upper part of the flip-flop. "We got our yarn tangled up but it still came out fine" - then you paste a flower to the top and you're done. (Be forewarned - the flip-flops and yarns are not identical, which can create a problem with some siblings/friends).

Age: Later School Years. Award Year: 2006.

Ribbon and Felt Tote
(Creativity for Kids $15.99 Score:) This wonderful hassle-free, no-mess craft kit features a pink cotton tote bag that is decorated with stick-on cutout shapes and a striped ribbon that trims the top by simply threading it through like a belt. This would have been a Platinum winner had it arrived earlier. Big enough to hold a small book and other treasures, this is an art project that will be worn with pride. No sewing or glue required. 6 & up.

Age: Early School Years,Later School Years. Award Year: 2006.

2007 Award
Create Your Own Books
(Creativity for Kids $15.99 Score:) Two blank books, one with a “window” cut out of the cover and pages that a photograph will show through. This could make a great book that’s all about one person or a pet or a special place. A second book is notebook-sized and has lined paper with spaces for illustrations, plus colored pencils and stickers. These are open-ended materials for the budding author/artist. Comes with some suggestions for creating rough drafts and a list of story starter ideas. Says 4 & up, but this is likely to be a better choice for 5–9s. (800) 311-8684.

Age: Early School Years,Later School Years. Award Year: 2007.

2007 Award
Wrist Pix
(Fashion Angels Enterprises $16 Score:) Set comes with small metal frames that you decorate using either the enclosed designs (ready for coloring with markers) or your own drawings or digital photos. Once you place your design, put a small acrylic cover over it; then you’re ready to make your bracelets by stringing the metal frames together using the enclosed elastic and glass beads. Still top rated, World Colors ($19.99 4), a more advanced kit with four colors of hemp to weave with a generous supply of shells, bells, wooden beads, and painted beads for bracelets, necklaces, and rings; Alphadot Bracelet Kit ($19.99 5), with 85 Alphadot beads that slide onto three thin watch-like bands; Ribbon Raps ($14 5), has beads to string on gossamer ribbon; and Mystix ($16 4), which includes semiprecious stones. 8 & up. (800) 492-3237. Editors’ Note: these new kits are marked 8 & up, but we found that kids often needed help getting started.

Age: Later School Years. Award Year: 2007.

2007 Award
Super Embroidery Kit
(Alex $19.99 Score:) Packaged in a red felt bag with a pocket, this is a charming sewing set for beginners. There’s an embroidery hoop and one practice cloth for trying out stitches as well as a dozen colors of floss, scissors, needles, transfer patterns to iron on, felt letters, shapes, and pieces to decorate with beads and sequins. A clear stitching guide is included. They have even included some buttons for practical needle-work. Marked 7 & up, we’d say more like 9 to ’tweens. (800) 666-2539.

2007 Award
Leg Warminators
(Fashion Angels Enterprises $17.99 Score:) Feel like having a "Flashdance" flashback? Try this fun kit that uses a really oversized plastic spool knitter to make retro leg warmers. New for a whole new generation of tweens, this is a good project to try together. One tester made this her "gift" to make and give to her friends. Younger crafters will need help getting started.

Age: Later School Years. Award Year: 2007.

Sweet Satin Music Box
(Creativity for Kids $18 Score:) We usually love wind up music jewelry boxes. Kids love winding the key to activate the music -- this is usually a memorable first jewelry box. This kit is marked 6 and up but we found the craft steps too difficult for this age range. While the kit is marked no sewing, kids are required to thread the tulle to make a skirt with the included pink thread. Kids are then instructed to add sequin flowers which are very pretty. The problem for our testers is that they had problems separating the two parts of the brad that secure the flowers on the tulle. One parent tester also thought that the directions were not clear enough. The steps for making the skirt should be marked "do this first" since it is really the first step. There was also no picture for adding the second piece of sequined ribbon. Bottom line: you will end up doing a good portion of this kit with a younger child.

Age: Early School Years,Later School Years. Award Year: 2007.

Fashion Angels Fashion Design Studio Set
(Fashion Angels Enterprises $24.95 Score:) If you have a future "fashion designer" in your house, this design studio will be a huge hit. There are three pre-printed pads that come with a template (a whole Fashion Angel form, a foot and a purse). There is a wonderful Style Guide that details the difference between such things as palazzo pants and jodhpurs. Designers can add their own designs with the set of included color pencils and markers. Refill pads can be purchased for $4.95 each.

Age: Early School Years,Later School Years. Award Year: 2007.

2007 Award
Pirate Dig Kit
(GeoCentral $10.99 Score:) One you unearth the skeleton of your pirate from the 7" gypsum block, you can string the pieces together to assembly an 11" pirate. Our testers needed help with the stringing stage. While some may find it kind of creepy, our testers loved that it combined both their love of dig toys and pirates! (We'd suggest adding safety glasses, they are not included in the kit.)

Age: Early School Years,Later School Years. Award Year: 2007.
