Ribbon and Felt Tote
(Creativity for Kids $15.99 Score:) This wonderful hassle-free, no-mess craft kit features a pink cotton tote bag that is decorated with stick-on cutout shapes and a striped ribbon that trims the top by simply threading it through like a belt. This would have been a Platinum winner had it arrived earlier. Big enough to hold a small book and other treasures, this is an art project that will be worn with pride. No sewing or glue required. 6 & up.

Lite Brite FX Flash Art
(Hasbro $19.99 Score:) Here’s the new twist on your old spin art machine. This one comes with neon paint and black cardboard designs cards. Turn off the lights and add paint as it spins. Watching paint turn into ever changing designs is the best part of this toy. But be forewarned, the end product is not as attractive when it stops AND there are only seven cards in the set. You’ll need lots of refills for this one at $6.99 a pop. It also has annoying music-that can be switched off but the label also warns that this paint can stain, so watch where they use this one! It’s one of those novelty items that will probably run out of pizzazz before the batteries run out. We tried it with big hot colored index cards and it’s not bad. 5 & up.

Beautiful Beaded Mirror
(Creativity for Kids $17.99 Score:) This would have been a top winner if it included more materials. A beautiful kit that requires more attention to detail than can be expected from 8s & up. (800) 311-8684. Still top rated, Beaded Dresser Set ($14.99 4) that comes with a small mirror set in wood, a ceramic heart frame and heart-shaped box, pastel colored beads, ribbons, and glue. A straightforward, easier project that requires kids to spread the glue out and then spill beads onto the glue for decoration. The light beads have a “princess/fairy” look to them and will appeal to younger girls. 6 & up. (800) 311-8684.

Age: Early School Years. Award Year: 2007.

2007 Award
Create Your Own Books
(Creativity for Kids $15.99 Score:) Two blank books, one with a “window” cut out of the cover and pages that a photograph will show through. This could make a great book that’s all about one person or a pet or a special place. A second book is notebook-sized and has lined paper with spaces for illustrations, plus colored pencils and stickers. These are open-ended materials for the budding author/artist. Comes with some suggestions for creating rough drafts and a list of story starter ideas. Says 4 & up, but this is likely to be a better choice for 5–9s. (800) 311-8684.

Age: Early School Years,Later School Years. Award Year: 2007.

Sweet Satin Music Box
(Creativity for Kids $18 Score:) We usually love wind up music jewelry boxes. Kids love winding the key to activate the music -- this is usually a memorable first jewelry box. This kit is marked 6 and up but we found the craft steps too difficult for this age range. While the kit is marked no sewing, kids are required to thread the tulle to make a skirt with the included pink thread. Kids are then instructed to add sequin flowers which are very pretty. The problem for our testers is that they had problems separating the two parts of the brad that secure the flowers on the tulle. One parent tester also thought that the directions were not clear enough. The steps for making the skirt should be marked "do this first" since it is really the first step. There was also no picture for adding the second piece of sequined ribbon. Bottom line: you will end up doing a good portion of this kit with a younger child.

2007 Award
Racer Bikes Design Shop
(Creativity for Kids $18 Score:) The reality is your five year old probably won't even care about the craft aspect of this kit because the two included racer bikes are so neat to play with all by themselves. Both bikes are easy to activate (they have pull back action) and move forward once you push down on the helmet of the racer. The kit comes with acrylic paint and stickers. The stickers give a more finished look although most kids will need help getting the stickers off the sheet. The paint doesn't give the same finished look but most kids won't care...it' all about the bikes.

Age: Early School Years. Award Year: 2007.

2007 Award
Fashion Angels Fashion Design Studio Set
(Fashion Angels Enterprises $24.95 Score:) If you have a future "fashion designer" in your house, this design studio will be a huge hit. There are three pre-printed pads that come with a template (a whole Fashion Angel form, a foot and a purse). There is a wonderful Style Guide that details the difference between such things as palazzo pants and jodhpurs. Designers can add their own designs with the set of included color pencils and markers. Refill pads can be purchased for $4.95 each.

Age: Early School Years,Later School Years. Award Year: 2007.

2007 Award
Pirate Treasure
(Creativity for Kids $17.99 Score:) With pirates all the rage, this will be a good choice for a party. It will take some planning ahead, a project to do before the big day. There's a small cardboard treasure chest that needs painting and decorating (supplies are included) along with gems, golden coins, and two sturdy map-making papers. For dramatic play there's an eye patch and head scarf. But this is where the planning comes in- you use the art materials to create a map or puzzle that the players then use in a treasure hunt.

Age: Early School Years. Award Year: 2007.

2007 Award
Pirate Dig Kit
(GeoCentral $10.99 Score:) One you unearth the skeleton of your pirate from the 7" gypsum block, you can string the pieces together to assembly an 11" pirate. Our testers needed help with the stringing stage. While some may find it kind of creepy, our testers loved that it combined both their love of dig toys and pirates! (We'd suggest adding safety glasses, they are not included in the kit.)

Age: Early School Years,Later School Years. Award Year: 2007.
