2008 Award
Rosie Flo's Coloring Book
(by Roz Streeten, Chronicle $8.99 Score:)

We do not do a lot of coloring books, but this has a new twist. Fanciful costumes are pre-drawn on the blank pages. The fun is in adding heads, hands, legs and color to the drawn costumes. Stories might also follow. This is an inexpensive but inviting kind of activity book that will fit in a holiday stocking or small birthday gift. Add colored pencils or markers with fine points and you are in business! A good take along travel activity book, too.

2005 Award
Knitting
(Klutz $24.95 Score:) An activity book that comes with 140 grams of rich variegated yarn, bamboo knitting needles, crochet hook and a book with instructions for six projects (done with crisp illustrations). 8 & up. Our testers also were attracted to Alex’s Yarn Craft kit ($20) that comes in a charming wicker basket. The yarn in the Klutz book is more grown-up than the bright yarns in the Alex Kit and the instructions are much more detailed. Our older testers wanted the wicker basket for their wool but preferred the instructions and wool of the Klutz book.

Comes with an appealing instruction book with kid friendly projects, 140 grams of rich variegated yarn (will appeal to grown ups as well), bamboo knitting needles, crochet hook and instructions for six projects.
