2010 Award
Twister Hoopla
(Hasbro $22 Score:)

Our test family found this game "Awesome!" It's an all new "twist" on Twister. This is played with a color spinner and instead of a mat, players use colored hoops that connect with varying body parts. There are five different variations of the game. Some involve tossing the hoops and catching them where they belong, others are more direct. However you choose to play, get ready for laughter, action and loads of fun. This is a great outdoor game and can be enjoyed by multi-age groups, including parents. Warning: this is not for kids under three since it contains a small ball, balloons, and other small parts that might be choking hazards.  6 & up.

Double Play All In One Sports Trainer
(Step 2 $99 Score:)

We wanted to love this inflatable sports center and so did our testers. We liked the idea of having a multiple sports center that wasn't necessarily a permanent fixture in your backyard.  There's just something fun about inflatable backyard toys.  We sent the product to a family with two kids (boys, 5 and 3) and will they enjoyed the novelty of the product - that gives you a place to shoot the basketball (into the 7' high hoop), a hockey and soccer net, as well as targets for practicing your baseball and football throws- their folks had problems with getting the toy to fully inflate.  (They used their own more powerful airblower but still it did not inflate fully or firmly enough to hold the center portion of the toy up in a strong wind). So when the boys went to shoot the basketball, the rim would just collapse...so that experience was frustrating.  The toy comes with a soccer ball, basketball,  stakes for securing the toy and a blower. The air blower can not be used to blow up the balls that come with the toy. So while we love the concept of this toy, we think the design needs some more tweaking.

2006 Awards
Gertie Balls
(Small World Toys $8 Score:)

Preschoolers need soft, lightweight, easy-to-catch balls that will not bend back a finger or hurt when they hit. Gertie Balls are gummy and soft enough for kids who may be scared of big heavy balls coming toward them. Also fun, Supersized Gertie Balls ($13), really oversized and great fun for this age group and next.  There's also a super cool Magic Gertie Ball that changes color with hot and cold water. 3 & up.

SNAP INFO: These colorful balls are soft and slightly sticky to the touch, making them easier to catch and hold onto. They come in a variety of sizes and with different textures. Testers especially liked the knobby one which gave kids an extra way to grip and hold. These are not for toddlers because the air tube can come out and could pose a choking hazard. ACTIVITY: Getting control takes practice. Hang a big hoopla hoop from a tree branch and try to get the ball through the hoop.

Age: Preschool, Early School Years. Award Year: 2006. Click here to purchase the product on Amazon.com.
