2013 Award
Corolle Les Cheries Chloe Au Palais Royal
(Corolle $51 Score:)

Chloe is totally on trend with faux fur wrap (on top of her pink party dress) and leopard print ballet flats and purse! What we love about this collection of 13" fashion dolls is that they celebrate girls. The clothes give a nod to trends but in completely age appropriate styles. Girls will also love her long hair, sweet (vinyl) face and vanilla scent. Chloe is also available in a ballerina outfit.

2013 Award
Big Hugs Elmo
(Hasbro $59.99 Score:)

Elmo is back this year and ready to give your child a big hug. This oversized version asks for hugs, tighter hugs and then says "too tight." Preschoolers will love the hugs. He encourages kids to pretend. Some of the choices seem off..."let's pretend to be rabbits...let's pretend to be astronauts"...not two things that jump to mind as the most interesting. Do toddlers/preschoolers even know what an astronaut is anymore? The body is a blend of soft red fur and a hard core (where the batteries are stored). The arms do bend so that they can be placed around a neck for a proper hug.  You will feel the mechanism in the arms - the equivalent of doll bones?  Elmo says over 50 phrases, sings songs and best of all, he goes to sleep after a pretty cute bedtime routine. Not clear whether Elmo will be as popular this year given the scandal, but as a straight forward novelty doll, he is pretty cute.

2013 Award
North American Bear Little Princess Happy Birthday
(North American Bear Co. $24.99 Score:)

Such a deliciously soft and cuddly 14-inch doll. She wears a pink velour dress with satin binding and a birthday cupcakes on the bodice and on her hot pink shoes. Her clothes are not removable, though she is machine washable. Her body is silky to the touch satin. Her ribbons are also permanently in place and have a different texture of grosgrain. Her features are stitched-on, making her safe enough for the youngest child. You can bring her home with blond or brunette velour "hair."

Age: Preschool. Award Year: 2013. Click here to purchase the product on Amazon.com.

2013 Award
North American Bear, Dolly Pockets Cinderella
(North American Bear Co. $24.99 Score:)

A 14-inch rag doll that comes with three finger puppets (Godmother, Prince and pumpkin) Cinderella is ready to act out her story or play an all new one. Her pink and lavender dress is on to stay and does not turn into a ball gown like some of the North American Topsy Turvy flip dolls. Her fabric hair is permanently in place, too. A good choice for preschoolers to encourage retelling familiar stories. Also see Dolly Pockets Red Riding Hood or Goldilocks and the Three Bears.

Age: Preschool, Early School Years. Award Year: 2013. Click here to purchase the product on Amazon.com.

2013 Awards
North American Bear, Dolly Pockets Red Riding Hood
(North American Bear Co. $24.99 Score:)

A 14-inch rag doll that comes with three finger puppets (Granny, the big bad wolf and the woodsman) Little Red is ready to act out her story or play an all new one. Her red cape and polka-dotted dress are on to stay and her fabric hairs is permanently in place, too. A good choice for preschoolers to engourage retelling familiar stories. Also see Dolly Pockets Cinderella and Goldilocks and the three Bears. 3 & up.

SNAP: Telling stories without a book in hand, can bring a story to life and encourage children to participate in the telling. This kind of doll with finger puppets is a great prop for doing that kind of story telling and maybe even getting little listeners to turn into little story tellers. Before a repetative line...pause and say and 'what did the big bad wolf say then?'

Age: Preschool, Early School Years. Award Year: 2013. Click here to purchase the product on Amazon.com.

2013 Award
Barbie Mars Explorer, Career of the Year 2013
(Mattel $12.99 Score:)

"She's out of this world!" That's what our tester said about the striking new Mars Explorer Barbie. Created in collaboration with NASA, she comes dressed in a sleek white space suit with hot pink bands. Her pink helmet is removable, as are her space boots and oxygen tank. As you would expect, Barbie is bringing her signature pink to the red planet. Winner of the Career of the Year, 2013, Barbie is once again showing girls that they can reach for the stars with jobs that involve science and exploration. Barbie Mars Explorer is available both as African American or Caucasian versions and commemorates the First anniversary of NASA's Curiosity Rover landing on Mars. We like the science factoids on the box and the image of the Curiosity Rover behind Barbie.
