2013 Award
North American Bear Dolly Pockets Goldilocks
(North American Bear Co. $24.99 Score:)

Dressed in a pink and calico dress with three pockets that hold the Mama, Papa and Baby Bear finger puppets, an all fabric Goldilocks is ready for acting out the whole classic story. Goldie has long blonde curls tied up in two bunches. Her features are stitched on and her dress is sewn on. A good choice for language development and recalling the sequence of the story from beginning to end. Try sharing the story telling to begin with.

2012 Award
Once Upon A Tree House Dolls
(Once Upon a Tree House $12-20 Score:)

For the dollhouse, you won't find a sweeter collection of multicultural dolls, both boys and girls to play in this company's treehouse or the dollhouse you may own. These fabric dolls have solid feet to stand on and are dressed in charming outfits. Some, like the dancer come with a ballet bar and there is a soccer player with a goal. Dolls are sold separately. The company also does a line of wooden outdoor equipment that could be used outside of any dollhouse. There is a picnic table, a see-saw, and a pop up cloth tent($80 for the set.) We did not see the wooden dollhouse as pictured online nor the furniture. We assume it is beautifully finished as all the other furnishings we did handle. We did see the Treehouse ($120) an open wooden setting with a swing and climbing ladder and a very long slide. It is a nice setting, but it probably will not take the place of a dollhouse. This is a new company with some pricey but beautiful looking products. We look forward to seeing more in the future. Meanwhile, we have to say these are the most special props for dollhouses we have seen in years!

Age: Preschool, Early School Years. Award Year: 2012.

2012 Award
Snow Queen Lottie
(Arklu $19.99 Score:)

One of an adorable collection of 7-inch dolls with removable clothing and moveable joints for poseable play. They have painted faces with big eyes and plenty of hair to arrange. These are not fashion dolls in the traditional sense, but girl dolls. Their clothes have a high-end look, though the girls are plastic and not overly pricey. Marked 3 & up although kids under 5-6 will seldom have the dexterity to dress them. Also see Pony Flag Race rider doll and Spring Celebration Ballet doll from the same line.

Age: Preschool, Early School Years. Award Year: 2012. Click here to purchase the product on Amazon.com.

2012 Awards
LOL Elmo
(Playskool $39.99 Score:)

Happy-go-lucky Elmo is bubbling over with laughs again. Press his foot and his laughing begins, squeeze the remote control fishbowl and he laughs and wiggles even more. Tickle his tummy and Elmo not only laughs, he tells little jokes, too. Guaranteed to bring on a case of the giggles, this season's Elmo is smaller than he used to be and not too cuddly. You can feel the mechanism through his plush body. That said, this is a novelty toy that will be a sure fire favorite of kids and grown-ups alike. 18 months and up.

SNAP: Activating Elmo just might interest kids who need to work on strengthening hands and fingers. Elmo certainly will motivate them and there are three different ways to discover and remember how he moves. Squeeze his foot, tickle his tummy and press the remote. That's a lot of ways to make things happen. Is it a long term toy? Probably not. This is one of those novelty items that has some redeeming features.

2012 Awards
Huggalo Collection
(Huggalo $19.95 Score:)

Huggalos are soft huggable dolls with a dedicated place on their chest for placing a photo of someone special. There's Doodle Dude (made of canvas and intended to be written on), Camo Joe (done in green fleece camaflouge), Huggsley (our favorite - he comes with a cape and is clearly the super hero of the line), and Camo Flo (same idea as Camo Joe but done in pink).  We think this collection will have an audience with not only the preschool set--but tweens/teens.  The line has a sense of humor and whimsy to it that will likely have wide appeal.

SNAP: Having a photo of a family member can be a comfort take-along when going out into the world. This one is less young looking than most and a little more amusing.

Age: Toddlers, Preschool, Early School Years, Later School Years, Tweens. Award Year: 2012. Click here to purchase the product on Amazon.com.

2012 Award
Flying Super Grover 2.0
(Hasbro $32.99 Score:)

Hands down our favorite novelty doll of 2012. Grover playfully engages your child in his ability to fly like a super hero.  He comes with a bright red cape (hey, he's a super hero) and a big "G" on his chest.  The best part -- his arms move as you "fly" him up and down.  All the while Grover provides the narrative of him going up, up, up or down, down, down.  Truth be told, he doesn't always know which way he's going. Cute sound effects that propel him as he soars.  He has a sense of humor-- something we really appreciate.

Age: Toddlers, Preschool. Award Year: 2012. Click here to purchase the product on Amazon.com.
