2009 Award
Chicka Chicka Boom Boom & Chicka 123...and more stories
(Scholastic $29.95 Score:)

We told you about the Chicka Chicka videos when they were introduced on single disk DVDs years ago. This new entry with both Chicka storybooks on one disk is part of a bigger collection, subtitled...more stories about letters and numbers. Another great choice from the Scholastic Storybook Treasures that includes 9 other storybook classics such as Emily's First 100 Days of School, How Much is a Million?, Millions of Cats, Inch by Inch and other gems. You may want to check the full list against those you may already own. There is a lot of overlap in the various Storybook Treasure collections and some are more animated than others. That said, these are videos with some of the best loved picturebooks often narrated by well known actors. Kids can watch them as pure entertainment or switch on the words and they can read along.

2009 Award
Tucker's Spooky Halloween
(by Leslie McGuirk, Candlewick $14.99 Score:)

Tucker, an adventuresome dog, wants to be something spooky for Halloween. His owner dresses him in cute costumes, but Tucker is tired of looking cute. Finding Halloween stories that are right for younger children can be hard, but this one is right on the mark. It's another charming package in the Candlewick Storybook Animations collection. There's a small book, stickers, a small poster and best of all a two-sided disk that plays a DVD animated version of the story on one side and the audio on the other side.  Ages 3-6.

Age: Preschool, Early School Years. Award Year: 2009. Click here to purchase the product on Amazon.com.

2001 Awards
Little Bear's Band
(Paramount $9.95 Score:) This series continues to be one of the best for preschoolers with age appropriate stories about friendship and family. Little Bear's Band with four musical tales includes our favorite, "Diva Hen." Also recommended, Summertime Tales, with four adventures revolving around games Little Bear and his friends play in the garden and in the woods. OPPENHEIM TOY PORTFOLIO PLATINUM AWARD '00. Also entertaining: A Kiss For Little Bear, Friends, Winter Tales, and Goodnight, Little Bear (PLATINUM AWARD '99). Forget Little Goblin Bear, a seasonal attempt at safe scare with several dream sequences that may be edgy for some viewers. 3 & up.

2001 Awards
Goodnight Moon & Other Sleepytime Tales
(HBO Kids Video $9.95 Score:) (HBO Kids Video $9.95) Our favorite video of the year. Though toddlers might enjoy the title story, this is not a film for the very young. Through interviews with dozens of real kids, this refreshing film captures kids' typical feelings about dreams and bedtime. Viewers will find comfort in knowing that they are not alone in some of their fears. Laced throughout these wise remarks from kids are Natalie Cole narrating Faith Ringgold's Tar Beach, Billy Crystal's telling of Mercer Mayer's There's a Nightmare in My Closet, and familiar bedtime songs sung by Tony Bennett, Aaron Neville, Lauryn Hill and Patti LaBelle. Oh, yes, and Goodnight Moon comes to life faithfully with brilliant color and minimal animation, and read just as it should be with simplicity by Susan Sarandon. Save this for kids from 4-7.

Age: Preschool,Early School Years. Award Year: 2001.

1996 Awards
The Very Hungry Caterpillar
(Disney $12.99 Score:) The story of that very well-loved, hungry caterpillar has been transformed into a totally magical video! Animation and music have enhanced Eric Carle's beautiful illustrations and given them another dimension while retaining their original beauty. Five other gems also appear on this video: "Papa, Please Get the Moon for Me," "The Mixed-up Chameleon," "The Very Quiet Cricket," and "I See a Song." A delicate blend of imagination and information illuminated with great artistry. Closed-captioned. 2-6.

2001 Award
CinderElmo
(Sony $12.95 Score:) Kids who know and love the story of Cinderella are going to love this lively and amusing "Elmo-sized" version of the story. As you might guess from the title, it's CinderElmo who is left behind on the night of the Princess' ball. His Fairy Godfather Oliver Platt does his magic. Also in the live action/animated cast are Kathy Najimy as the mean old stepmother, Keri Russell as the Princess, and French Stewart as a dog named Prince. You can use this as an introduction to comparative lit and discuss how it's the same and different from the original tale. Closed-captioned. 4 & up.

Age: Preschool,Early School Years. Award Year: 2001.

2001 Award
Franklin's Blanket
(Universal $12.95 Score:) Franklin is about to go on a visit and he can't find his blanket. Everyone offers him a substitute, but like most young viewers, Franklin wants his one and only blanket which turns up just in the nick of time. Closed-captioned. . 4-7. Most of the original videos are excellent. Some of the recent (2001) versions have been turned up a notch in the scary cartoon mode department. You need to screen these before showing them. Franklin and the Green Knight, which starts out fine and then drops in a big-beaked griffin and fire-eating dragon, is just way too frightening for preschoolers.

Age: Preschool,Early School Years. Award Year: 2001.

2000 Award
Kipper
(Hallmark $9.98 Score:) Like Mark Inkpen's storybooks featuring Kipper the dog, each little vignette has a small adventure without the all-too-typical terrifying drama that has marked so much of today's videos for the very young. 2 & up.

Age: Toddlers,Preschool. Award Year: 2000.

2000 Awards
Madeline at the Ballet
(Sony $9.96 Score:) Once more they've come up with a new story based on the original characters in the Ludwig Bemelmans book series. This one will have special meaning to the many little ballerinas who long to get their first toe shoes and worry about living up to their dreams of becoming prima ballerinas. Narrated by Christopher Plummer, this one talks to the importance of practice and believing in oneself. Closed Captioned. 4 & up.

Age: Preschool,Early School Years. Award Year: 2000.
