) These vinyl books—Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star; Rock-a-Bye Baby; and I’m a Little Teapot—can be enjoyed with sound on or off. They can be “played ”with music alone or with music with singing. Pleasant music, not overly loud, makes these an entertaining novelty for sing-along fun. Another book, Baby’s Book of Small Talk, is a knowing-and-naming book showing single objects on each page, with accompanying text written in English, Spanish, or French—take your choice. (800) 323-6336. Age: Infants,Toddlers. Award Year: 2007.

) A breezy child-like conception of art without the usual museum solemnity. The book captures all the exuberance that children bring to their early explorations of color and form . . . free-form, especially. Here is a child who loves art and his mother, who loves both the child and his art. 3 & up. Age: Preschool. Award Year: 2007.

) In a delightful comedy of errors, Boo and Baa, two resourceful sheep, try rescuing a cat up a tree. Boo finds himself out on a limb and unable to get down. A clever little story that builds on the concept of friendship. 3–6. Age: Preschool,Early School Years. Award Year: 2007.

) Once again, Farmer Brown’s barnyard critters are trying to pull a fast one. This time they are rehearsing for a talent show at the county fair and the sounds emanating from the barn have Farmer Brown puzzled. With all the singing, this is sure to be a noisy and funny read-aloud opportunity. 4–8.
Age: Preschool,Early School Years. Award Year: 2007.

) A charming moose hunt that your child will enjoy. Lilting verse follows the animals in our far north. Careful lookers will find a moose on every page and enjoy Beaton’s appliqué art. A glossary of the animals at the end gives this an information edge. Same idea arrived late with lots of playful language and a moose to find in Looking for a Moose (by Phyllis Root/illus. by Randy Cecil, Candlewick $15.99 ). Both are winning choices! 3 & up. Age: Preschool. Award Year: 2007.

) Get ready to roll! This “transportation” book takes mushroom and radish creatures riding, gliding, and rolling along. Zany creations are coupled with zippy rhymes that are fun to read aloud. There’s a ginger reindeer and a red pear sleigh on green bean runners. Delightful! 4 & up. Age: Preschool. Award Year: 2007.

) A year has passed since the fox outsmarted the Gingerbread Boy. When the lonely old couple decide to try again, they create a spunky Gingerbread Girl who leads them on a merry chase, proving that history need not repeat itself! 4–8. Age: Preschool,Early School Years. Award Year: 2007.

) A very satisfying story of a lion who comes inside the library and becomes a rule-abiding patron. But one day, when the librarian takes a tumble, Lion has the good sense to break the rules. A big idea for kids to grapple with—knowing right from wrong, and when an absolute is not so absolute. Hawkes’s illustrations give this an old-fashioned “Robert McCloskey” look that fits the story. 4–7. Age: Preschool,Early School Years. Award Year: 2007.

) Move over, Curious George, Oscar may be little but he needs no Man with a Yellow Hat to save him from his journey out into the big world. When Susie goes off to school without a key she will need, Oscar, an independent little monkey, takes responsibility and no easy trip to reach Susie just in the nick of time. A fast-paced fantasy. 3–7. Age: Preschool,Early School Years. Award Year: 2007.

) In typical fashion, Sabuda has created yet another incredible pop-up book. This is darker and the information denser than most. If your young reader is taken with the world of sharks, whales, scorpions, and prehistoric sea monsters that still live, this is a book to dive into. There will be lots of ooohs and aahhhhs as the pages, large and small, pop open. They say 5 & up; we think this will be a waste for kids under 7 or 8 but enjoyed by those well beyond—say 40 & up. Age: Early School Years,Later School Years. Award Year: 2007.
