) This would have been on the Platinum Award list in our book, but it arrived too late. As always, Chris Van Allsburg spins a wonderful story that is full of suspense with a dollop of magic. After seeing a magician do hypnosis Calvin and his buddy Rodney come home and build a machine and try to hypnotize his little sister Trudy. Much to his surprise it works and then Calvin cannot figure out how to snap her out of it. Little sisters who are often left behind by big brothers will love this get even tale. 6 & up. Given one last chance, it turns out that P.U.’s powerful scent serves to save the day. ) Close up photos of barnyard animals with a rhyming text about their actions. Some will be a stretch, even for adult readers…How about “pigs bossing? “This is there to rhyme with the “chicken crossing,” but never mind. Most of the rhymes are fine, the photos are clear, and there is a lot to talk about. Age: Toddlers. Award Year: 2007.

) Some mighty big questions are here that have been teased out with amusing illustrations. This is a book that should lead to some talking and thinking beyond the sometimes punny funny attempts to get a smile. This may be one of those books that is more for adults than all but the most subjective kids. They say 4-8. We’d say more like 7 & up, up, up. Age: Early School Years,Later School Years. ) Winter has come and Sam is lucky to have a fine red coat, green fuzzy mittens and a blue wooly hat. But as he loses each of his things there is a repetitive rhythm to the little story that toddlers will soon catch onto and enjoy. Too bad the red coat is not as red as red should be. It’s a short and sweet story for 2 & up. Age: Toddlers. Award Year: 2007.

) With just a little help kids can put together a fleet of foam gliders and let the high flying fun begin. Punch them out of the spiral pages and follow the simple directions. These call for some dexterity, but are relatively simple to construct. Test fly them inside to find the one that flies the highest, furthest, and trickiest. This is an inexpensive book/toy that is ideal for play date or a rainy day at home. 5 & up. Age: Early School Years. Award Year: 2007.
