Good Morning Alarm Clock
(Creativity for Kids $14 Score:) A handsome translucent alarm clock that is ready to be decorated with special paints and stick-on gems. This is a really gender-free craft item that boys are sure to design quite differently than girls. But that's one of its charms. It's open-ended but once completed it's a functional clock that can be used in a child's room or given as a gift. This runs on a single AA battery and will wake them with a gentle beep. Arrived too late for the 2003 book but is bound to be a good choice for school aged kids.

Age: Early School Years,Later School Years. Award Year: 2003.

Beka Adjustable Drawing Desk with Paper
(Beka, Inc. $25 Score:) This wooden tabletop easle is a handsome, adjustable slantboard for art projects. We think this is an especially good choice for those who don't have the space for a stand-up easel but want a dedicated surface for drawing, painting or other creative ventures. SNAP: This slantboard will be useful on a tabletop for kids who are not able to use the typical standing easel. It has smooth edges, adjusts to various angles and has a wipe off surface.

Age: Preschool,Early School Years. Award Year: 2003.

2003 Award
Girls from Many Lands: Neela Doll & Book
(Pleasant Company $50 Score:) One of a new collection of Girls from Many Lands, Neela is dressed in the orange sari and gold jewelry that she wears to her sister's wedding in 1939 when the world was about to plunge into World War II and India's Freedom Fighters were looking for their independence from the British Empire. Neela, the doll and her story (Victory Song written by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni) are for older school aged girls. She is not a play doll, but one for display as part of a collection. Her adventure portrays a girl with gumption who questions traditions and yearns to play a role in her country's history. We look forward to reviewing other books and dolls in this new series. There will be dolls and books set in Alaska in 1890, China in 1857, France in 1711 and England in 1592. 9-12.

Age: Later School Years. Award Year: 2003.

Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends Rescue Hospital
(RC2 Learning Curve $50 Score:) It's Harold the Helicopter to the rescue! When Harold lands on the helipad a slight bit of pressure will pop the hospital garage doors open so the ambulance pops out. This little set comes with railroad track next to the building and road to surface ramp for ambulance. Also new and amazing a musical Merry-Go Round with magnetic wooden animals that can be rearranged.

Age: Preschool,Early School Years. Award Year: 2003.

Alex's Floor Standing Easel
(Alex $95 Score:) Taking the paints out of doors gives young artists a new scene- and if you add a bit of white paint to the colors they have an all new palette that looks like summer. Adding different paints and paper often inspires kids. Alex's wooden easel has a chalk board on one side and a dry-erase board on the other. Comes with a roll of paper, but we find that using clips and a pad of paper is easier for kids to handle with independence.

Age: Preschool,Early School Years. Award Year: 2003.

2003 Awards
Oball
(Rhino Toys $6.95 Score:) Tots will have no trouble picking up this colorful easy-to-grasp ball with finger holes all over it. This is dishwasher safe and fun for rolling back and forth for early social games and ideal for tots who are crawling or developing two handed-ness as they pass it back and forth from one hand to another. It's also lightweight enough to be non-treatening for toddlers and preschoolers kids who are just learning to catch and throw. SNAP Activities: This soft easy to clutch ball needs no adaptation. It is lightweight and its many fingerholds, makes it a good choice for active play. For sitting still time, try pushing a soft scarf or odd socks inside and encourage your child to get them out. This builds dexterity and stick-to-it problem soving. For one on one time, you can also play a game by dangling this on a scarf and encouraging lttile ones to kick or bat at it.

Age: Infants,Toddlers,Preschool. Award Year: 2003.

The Icee Maker
(Spinmaster $24.99 Score:) Our testers were excited with the idea of being able to make their ow slush drinks. In fact they thought it would be grat fun for a party. But, alas, this got a lukewarm response (sorry)- after a whole lot of turning and wishing it made a disappointing drink that wasn't "slushy enough."
