Millions of Cats

2003 Award
Clifford, the Big Red Dog
(by Norman Bridwell, Scholastic $14.95 Score:) You've heard of tall tales? Well here's that well-loved, long-lived, all dog Clifford. Imagine he's 40 years old this year and his story is just as "right-on" the mark for first fantasies as it was when it first appeared. Here the make believe is so far-fetched that kids will see the humor of a dog that's big eough to ride and too big to hide! The anniversary cover is flocked with texture and sure to become a keeper to be shared maybe 40 years from now!

Age: Preschool. Award Year: 2003.

The Prince's Bedtime
(by Joanne Oppenheim/illus. by Miriam Latimer, Barefoot Books $9.99 Score:)

While we donít give ourselves awards, this is truly one of our familyís favorite bedtime stories. Thereís a little prince who canít fall asleep no matter what his parents try . . . wizards, musicians . . . but with no success. A much simpler approach does the trick. A must-read for reluctant young sleepers! 3Ė7.

Age: Preschool, Early School Years. Award Year: 2007. Click here to purchase the product on Amazon.com.

2007 Award
Nicolas, where have you been?
(by Leo Lionni, Knopf $16.99 Score:) A reissue of a classic Lionni tale that speaks to the idea of lumping people together as all good or all bad. Mouse learns from the generosity of a family of birds that the big bad bird who frightened him was not the only kind of bird in the world. A bit of a preachment, but one worth sharing! As always, Lionniís papercut collages are a study in artistic economy.

Age: Preschool,Early School Years. Award Year: 2007.
