2008 Award
Born to Read
(by Judy Sierra/ illus. by Marc Brown, Knopf $16.99 Score:)

Picturebook regulars will recognize some of their old favorites ( as in Pat the Bunny and Very Hungry Caterpillar) in Marc Brown’s illustrations of this entertaining tall tale. Young Sam begins reading before he can talk, no doubt, and with his ability to read he solves all obstacles. Written in verse, this will be a good choice for preschoolers. 4 & up.

2009 Award
Pink!
(by Lynne Rickards/ illus. by Margaret Chamberlain, Scholastic $16.95 Score:)

Patrick Penguin awakes and finds that he has turned pink! At first blush Patrick is horrified to find that he is different. But as he travels he discovers he is more at home looking different than sort of fitting in with a flock of pink flamingoes. This is fun, but not as light and bubbly as Naked Mole Rat Gets Dressed. 4 & up.

Age: Preschool. Award Year: 2009.

Pretty Pru
(by Polly Dunbar, Candlewick $12.99 Score:)

Welcome Tilly and friends, a new series for for big toddlers. In this story Pru, a hen, is busy putting on her makeup when Tumpty, a blue elephant makes off with her purse. He shares her make up with Hector, the pig Tiptoe, a bunny, and Doodle, an alligator. It’s the little girl, Tilly who helps Pru find her missing purse and its contents. Told in lively dialog with enough humor and action for those who are ready for stories with small adventures. Also charming, Where’s Tumpty? (4.5) with the same cast only this time Tumpty has closed his eyes and thinks others cannot see him.

2009 Award
Where's Tumpty?
(by Polly Dunbar, Walker Books $12.99 Score:)

Welcome Tilly and friends, a new series for for big toddlers. In this story Tumpty, a blue elephant, has decided to hide by closing his eyes. He does not seem to understand that others can see him even if he cannot see them. Kids will need to be able to make that leap in order to see the humor of this joke. SO, this one may be best for preschoolers rather than 2’s. Happily, the game ends when Tumpty hears about the cookies everyone is sharing.

Age: Toddlers, Preschool. Award Year: 2009. Click here to purchase the product on Amazon.com.

2009 Award
Farmer Joe and the Music Show
(by Tony Mitton/ illus. by Guy Parker-Rees, Scholastic $16.99 Score:)

Farmer Joe’s critters are not doing their thing until he pulls out his guitar and gives them some music. Nest thing you know Fiddler Fox arrives on the scene and surprisingly, he breaks the old stereotype. He is not there waiting to gobble up the innocents. He really just joins the musical fun, as does Bear with a double bass. A bit contrived, but lively fun for reading aloud. 3 & up.

Age: Preschool, Early School Years. Award Year: 2009.

2009 Award
Chicken Soup
(by Jean Van Leeuwen/ illus. by David Gavril, Abrams Books $16.95 Score:)

There’s a terrible rumor afloat in the barnyard. Mrs. Farmer is going to make chicken soup. All the chickens are in a panic including a little chick who cannot stop sneezing! A quick paced picture book that may be a one joke pony, but it’s good fun with plenty of action and opportunities for giant ah-chooing! 3 & up.

Age: Preschool. Award Year: 2009. Click here to purchase the product on Amazon.com.
