2009 Award
Carry Me
(by Rena D. Grossman, Star Bright Books $6.95 Score:)

Babies all over the world are carried about. Told in simple verse this catalogs with handsome color photos parents and babies being carried in blankets, baskets, and backpacks, among others. A glossary shows the countries and photos from the book. Though the geography is well beyond the intended audience this is a beautiful multicultural book that is printed on sturdy cardboard stock that little children can enjoy independently once you have shared it with them.  Babies do love looking at other babies and these are exceptionally colorful photographs and lovely to look at!

Where's Spot?
(by Eric Hill, Putnam $11.95 Score:)

Spot the pup is missing! Where can he be? Lift the flaps and see! This is the original title in the granddaddy series of lift the flap books. There are dozens of variations with Spot searching for friends, hats, books, you-name-it. They work best when the objects are familiar and easy for young children to identify.  Not much story in these little books, but the suspense is toddler-sized. These are well done small mysteries with just the right size and suspense for young page turners.  Be prepared: Little hands may not be able to lift without a rip. The boardbook versions may be a sturdier choice, but some are hard for little fingers, too. Read befroe you buy. This is a well loved but uneven series-some are much better than others.

Age: Toddlers, Preschool. Award Year: 1994.
