2008 Award
Arena
(Playmobil $89.99 Score:) Playmobil meets the Gladiator, with this ancient arena that includes audience seating, trap doors to the lion cages, a wide gate, and a large battle area. Comes with eight figures, two lions, a double harness chariot, and more. One of the most unusual pretend settings we've seen in a long time! They say 5 & up, but will be of more interest to older kids.

Age: Early School Years,Later School Years. Award Year: 2008.

Lego Ring of Fire
(Lego Systems, Inc. $29.99 Score:) Our toy tester wanted to really test this one--it's an update on a toy that was in the Lego line several years ago. First you build your racer, then you build a catapult and a ramp with a ring of fire. Unfortunately our tester found that this really didn't work as well as the original. The car really didn't launch sufficiently to go through the ring and the ring didn't stay together very well. The company has signed a verification form complying with our safety requirements. We did not independently test this toy in a lab.

Age: Early School Years. Award Year: 2008.

2009 Award
Mega Bloks Streetz Series
(Mega Bloks $9.99 Score:)

A collection of small builds fit together to create a city setting. They come with two small vehicles, one of which lights up and a ramp for doing acrobatic stunts.  We tested the Donut Dash shop with a revolving giant donut on top and the Micro Motors garage with a pizza shop. These are small quick builds with play value. They will also appeal to the collecting bug that school age kids often have. 6 & up.
The company has signed a verification form complying with our safety requirements. We did not independently test this toy in a lab.

2006 Award
Knights' Empire Castle
(Playmobil $179 Score:) Playmobil’s Knights’ Empire Castle uses the company’s new SystemX, which is designed for shorter assembly time and durability. Comes with a working gate and dungeon and looks like the classic friendly Playmobil settings of years past. By comparison, Rock Castle ($79.99 ) has a more sinister feel to it. Suggested add-on, the Red Dragon (because you always need a dragon), is sold separately. Projectile cannons sold separately. Also darker in feel than their previous castles is Lego’s new Vladek’s Dark Fortress ($99 ), which comes with catapults. Most kids love the action of projectiles until one hits them. 8–12. (800) 233-8756.

Age: Early School Years. Award Year: 2006.

2006 Award
City
(Lego Systems, Inc. $19.99 Score:) The consensus from our builders this year was, “no way a 5 year old could do this.” That said, our older testers enjoyed the city-themed sets that include a Fire and Construction set. Our 8-year-old tester enjoyed building and playing with the Fire Truck ($19.99/214 pieces ) that comes with a movable ladder, two firefighters, and a boat for sea rescues. The same family had more difficulty with the Fire Station ($29.99/260 pieces ). One tester’s parent commented that it’s “like a boy’s ultimate dollhouse,” but the 6-year-old builder had trouble following the directions and the lift in the station “did not work well.” Once assembled it was enjoyed as a pretend setting. Marked 5 & up, but most 5s will need assistance. (800) 223-8756.

2009 Award
Lego Duplo Dino Valley
(Lego Systems, Inc. $49.99 Score:) Preschoolers who are into dinos will enjoy this new play setting that comes with a triceratops (and baby), a Pteranodon (and baby) and a T-Rex. While we believe the inclusion of cavemen is unfortunate, preschoolers will enjoy all of the pieces included in this set. We recommend that you can even discuss the historical inaccuracy. This is also true of the Playmobil dinosaur sets (although those people are dressed in modern clothes a la Jurassic Park or King Kong). In either case, it should be pointed out that most preschoolers are able to enjoy the ferociousness of dinosaurs because they are assured right from the start that dinos and man did not share this great planet at the same time! The company has signed a verification form complying with our safety requirements. We did not independently test this toy in a lab.

Age: Preschool,Early School Years. Award Year: 2009.
