2010 Award
Plan Toys Planimal Australia Series
(Plan Toys $30 Score:)

One of new series of articulated wooden animals that are perfect for block settings or pretend play. The four animals featured in the Australia set are a kangaroo with baby in her pouch, a koala, wombat and emu. The set comes with cardboard habitat that they can be displayed on. The back of the display has factoids about the habitat and each of the creatures. These are handsome little figures that are smooth to the touch and articulated so that they can stand, sit, or lie down. Even their heads can be moved to look down or upward. The emu with it's long neck is wonderfully articulated, though not always steady on its feet. A nice blend of pretend and science. 3 & up. The company has signed a verification form complying with our safety requirements. We did not independently test this toy in a lab.

Plan Toys Planimal Polar Series
(Plan Toys $30 Score:)

One of new series of articulated wooden animals. These are perfect for block settings and pretend play. The four animals featured in the Polar set are a polar bear, arctic fox, penguin, and harp seal. Unfortunately, they have mixed the creatures of North and South Polar regions in one set. Though the setting may look similar, the penguin is not found where the Polar bear lives...so use this as a teaching opportunity. The set comes with cardboard habitat that the figures can be displayed on. The back of the display has factoids about the habitat and each of the creatures. These are handsome little figures that are smooth to the touch and articulated so that they can stand, sit, or lie down. Even their heads can be moved to look down or upward. In this set the polar bear's head is articulated to move upright or down for hunting. A nice blend of pretend and science. 3 & up. The company has signed a verification form complying with our safety requirements. We did not independently test this toy in a lab.

2010 Award
Star Wars Imperial AT-AT
(Hasbro $119.99 Score:)

The ultimate Star Wars play setting.  Our testers were all clamoring to get this one out of the box.  It's over two feet tall, comes with electronic sounds, phrases and lights. The backend opens to make space for the Speeder Bike (included). Comes with one storm trooper that can repel off the top of the AT-AT to the bottom.  The sides also open as does the front end - so there are plenty of play opportunities for making things happen. It does have projectiles (against our policy) but they do aim downward so we are making an exception here.  Let's face it the whole All Terrain Armored Transport theme doesn't exactly fit in our "no aggressive or violent" toys-- but it's fantasy and hey, its Star Wars. While some of us thought it would be better if it actually walked like it does in the movie, others quickly (and quite loudly) expressed their view that this toy was "awesome" just as it is!  If you are looking for a big ticket present for the Star Wars fan in your life, look no further.

2010 Award
Guidecraft Victorian Dollhouse
(Guidecraft $186 Score:)

This is the ultimate in dollhouse design. We call it the Victorian McMansion. It's a huge three full floors high with two spiral staircases, French doors, six spacious rooms, balconies, and a tall tower with a spire on top. Built of birch plywood the windows are all trimmed in a bright blue. This does require adult assembly and does not come with furniture. It is 28" wide. 13.5" deep, and 38" high. 3 & up, up, up.

The company has signed a verification form complying with our safety requirements. We did not independently test this toy in a lab.

Furreal Friends GoGO My Walkin' Pup
(Hasbro $50 Score:) This is not to be confused with an earlier GoGo Pup that was voice activated and didn't always obey. This GoGo really does follow orders since it is tethered and operated by hand. A white furry dog with curly spaniel type floppy ears and silky long white coat comes with a pink and purple collar and a long purple leach with controls in the plastic handle. Take you pup for a walk and it will follow commands to turn in a circle, walk forward, wag its tail, and even make puppy sounds. This is less elaborate than earlier Furreal animals, but one that requires no house breaking or shots and will not chew up your shoes or doors.

SNAP: Since this pup is tethered it will not go too far, yet kids can make things happen and are in control once they learn what actions will follow according to the buttons they push. So this is a toy that empowers kids and involves both fine motor skills and memory. Best part is, it needs no shots, housebreaking or baths.

Calico Critters Country Tree House
(International Playthings $169 Score:)

Four rooms plus a hot tub, pagoda, waterslide, lake and patio provide a perfect habitat for two Mango Monkeys. You'll need to add furnishing and creatures to this dollhouse-like setting that will provide hours of dramatic play. The house measures 24" tall and can be enjoyed by several children together since there are play platforms all around. The animal families look like they stepped out of a Beatrix Potter storybook. The company has signed a verification form complying with our safety requirements. We did not independently test this toy in a lab.
