2009 Award
Eric Carle Caterpillar Teether
(Kids Preferred $7.00 Score:)

Just the right shape and size for older infants to handle on their own. The body of the caterpillar has interesting textures and crinkle sounds, the head has a good rattle and the back end has a round green bumpy textured teether that is sure to sooth tender gums. The company has signed a verification form complying with our safety requirements. We did not independently test this toy in a lab.

Eric Carle Stacking Rings
(Kids Preferred $20 Score:)

This classic shaped stacking ring toy is made of fabric with a velvety caterpillar body and rings of various patterned fabrics. Each ring has a different sound inside and there is no size order. So far, so good. But we found the caterpillar leans to one side and fitting the corduroy ring on the velvet is not easy…nor do the other rings fit will ease. Finally, the high-pitched electronic sound chip is difficult to activate and then, more irritating than pleasing. Too bad…an opportunity lost. It looks cuter than it plays. The company has signed a verification form complying with our safety requirements. We did not independently test this toy in a lab.

Eric Carle Activity Caterpillar
(Kids Preferred $19 Score:)

A fabric caterpillar that looks like it stepped out of the Very Hungry Caterpillar book. It straps to the side of the crib or to a stroller. We would have given this an award if it were not for the high-pitched electronic music. It has a spinner with beads to turn, another ring with larger beads to finger, a squeaker in a little red velour apple, small colorful ribbons to explore with little hands, and lots of color and pattern on this soft fabric toy. Chances are your baby will not be able to activate the music and can enjoy this in the silent mode. Problem is, you cannot turn it off. The company has signed a verification form complying with our safety requirements. We did not independently test this toy in a lab.

Eric Carle Activity Dome
(Kids Preferred $20 Score:)

This is a fabric dome with a mirror and some peek-a-boo activities. Although it is an attractive large fabric toy for the floor, we feel there is not a lot for babies to do with it, whether they are sitting up or still lying down.  There's nothing really wrong with it...but there's nothing really right, either. The company has signed a verification form complying with our safety requirements. We did not independently test this toy in a lab. 2009 Awards
Organic Ring Rattles
(Mary Meyer $11 Score:)

This classic shape is good for tracking and soft enough for baby to handle without bopping himself in the head. Available with an elephant, monkey or frog's head; we'd suggest the frog with it's big eyes as the best choice for catching baby's attention. These have a soft rattle sound that adds to their sensory value. Fun to hear, see, touch and even taste, safely. There is also an Organic Baby Blankie ($18)  in this line with the same animals on top. Baby is likely to enjoy fingering this version.

2009 Award
Infantino Drop & Slide Caterpillar
(Step 2 $35 Score:)

Drop the colorful balls into the chute and they slip down the ball run on this big caterpillar. Its feelers light up as the balls set off jolly sounds and music. Yes, there is a volume control or even a sounds-off option that is set when you put the batteries in to power up the toy with 3 AA batteries. For variation on the ball run, a little ;train-like" toy also slides down the run or put it on the back of the caterpillar and watch it go. This action moves fast, is uncomplicated, and gives children a powerful sense of making things happen. Most of all, toddlers love the repetitive action. A perfect 1st birthday gift!

Note: The company has just informed us that this will now be a Target exclusive and marketed under their own brand CIRCO.

2009 Award
Infantino Spiral Spin Top
(Step 2 $12.99 Score:)

Push down on the big orange button and the colorful balls inside the dome spin on the spiral. The balls make a whirring sound and the painted zigzag on the spiral spins to create a solid line. A good toy for eye/hand coordination, dexterity, and the notion of cause and effect. This is a classic form redone in bright eye- appealing colors. Sitting up babies will love activating this top and a sense of power in making things happen.

2009 Award
Infantino Loop a Palooza
(Step 2 $23.50 Score:)

There are so many activities for baby to explore on this fabric rattle. There are many textures and patterns as well as crinkle petals. There's a peek-a-boo mirror with stain ribbons to finger, a pull bug that jitters, tow other fabric bugs that slide on their rings and even two teething rings that clatter when they hit each other and another with many textures for sore gums. Hang this in the stroller or car seat or hand if to baby when a diversion is needed. Its light enough for baby to handle and the fabric rings are easy enough for baby to grab and hold.

The company has signed a verification form complying with our safety requirements. We did not independently test this toy in a lab.
