2009 Awards
Stack 'n Surprise Count 'n Build Snail Pail
(Fisher-Price $22.94 Score:)

Ten colorful Stack 'n Surprise Blocks come in a clever 'pail' the most open-ended playset of this award winning line. Although they call it a count 'n build toy, for starters babies are going to use it for fill and dump games. Babies will like the sound of the plastic blocks thrown into the see through pail. The carry handle and lids of the container are building platforms where blocks can be stacked. Each has a pop up action that reveals a little face and one-with a snail head has a squeaker. Use this toy for building language concepts as well. Talk about the colors, about adding one more, about the making the stack taller, about covering all the pegs on the lid, and you can even count them. There are numerals impressed on the blocks, so older sibs may like putting them in numerical order. In the same line, look for the Peek-a-boo Choo-Choo, Blockity Pop Caterpillar, Dump Truck, and the Stack n Surprise Blocks Songs n Smiles Sillytown. They say 6-36 months. Wed say more like 9 months & up.

Stack 'n Surprise Block Songs 'n Smiles Sillytown
(Fisher-Price $50 Score:)

Featuring the new Stack 'n Surprise Blocks that pop up when stacked, this is the top of the line play set. It includes 8 colorful pop up blocks that are activated when they are placed on a platform and baby spins the musical roller. It plays many tunes and interesting sounds. There is also a little wheeled toy that slides down a ramp when baby hits a big lever and on the opposite side of the play setting there is a block drop that responds to a swipe of a hand. The lift and dump activity is a little tricky, but pleasing once baby gets the hang of what fits into the window opening. We think the best parts of this toy are the little pop up blocks with smiling peek-a-boo faces on them. There are smaller sets in this line that are less costly and totally satisfying. Look for the Peek-a-boo Choo-Choo, Count n Build Snail Pail, the Blockity Pop Caterpillar and Dump Truck. These are good examples of  toys that baby can quickly learn to activate and get a pleasing sense of being able to make things happen. They say 6-36 months, we'd say 9 months is probably a better start time.

A cute red velour apple with a see though plastic side, a hole and yes, a Very Hungry Caterpillar inside. The multi-colored dotted fabric that lines the apple adds to its visual appeal and recalls the colorful pages of the Eric Carle classic storybook that is now available in a cardboard version for little lap-sitters to enjoy. 2009 Award
Eric Carle Chime Toys Lion/Caterpillar
(Kids Preferred $10 Score:)

A set of two little fabric chime toys to hang on the stroller or on the handle of an infant carrier. The chimes are totally inside the little fabric toys so they are what you might call...safe and sound. They can also be added to the bars on a typical playmat for baby to bat at or kick. There's a green caterpillar with a bright red head and an orange lion with a spotted body. Both make pleasing quiet sounds that may remind you of gentle wind chimes as they dangle in baby's sight. Older infants will want to explore them and pass them from one hand to another. With the sounds safely sewn inside, these are a small treat for the senses.
