2009 Award
Baby Deglingos Dog, Rabbit, Hedgehog & Cow
(All New Materials $19.95 Score:)

These unstuffed lovies are made of soft wide wale corduroy and calico with heads and little legs done up in the shapes of a dog, cow, hedgehog and rabbit. We are passing on the animals with a lot of fuzzy trim since we expect these will be mouthed.  We wish these had openings in the bottom for puppets. However they can be used for tracking and are likely to become a touchy- feely comfort toys for babies. They look like toys one would find at a craft fair—very folksie.

2009 Award
Tiny Love Tiny Princess Mobile
(Tiny Love $49.95 Score:)

We usually steer clear of gender specific baby toys. Infants tend to see high contrast black and white and then primary colors first. But, sometimes, a mobile is chosen to go with the room décor. So….if you must have pink, here is a new one with the same kind of action as other Tiny Love mobiles and that is a real plus. As the critters turn they are engineered to spin in sight they are angled with their faces looking down, so baby is looking at faces instead of edges of the dangly toys. This one has a big pink flowers, a bright colored princess butterfly, turtle and frog prince. The music box can be turned on and off with a remote controller and plays Chopin, Mozart, Bach, and Debussy with birds on the nature button. Although the mobile must come down for safety reasons at 5 months, the music box can continue to function on the crib rail. Newborn. The company has signed a verification form complying with our safety requirements. We did not independently test this toy in a lab.

2009 Award
Tiny Love Classic Developmental Mobile
(Tiny Love $39.95 Score:)

A jolly looking bunny, horse and chick will circle to the music of Bach, Mozart and others on the latest mobile from Tiny Love. These boldly patterned and bright colored critters are engineered to spin in sight as they turn. Their faces are looking down so baby is looking at them instead of just seeing their feet. The critters twirl under cones that have eye-catching black and white swirls inside. There are small plastic shapes that click as they slide on the armature. The music box that attaches to the crib rail also has a night light. This mobile does not have a remote control. Although the mobile must come down for safety reasons at 5 months, the music box can continue to function on the crib rail. Newborn. The company has signed a verification form complying with our safety requirements. We did not independently test this toy in a lab.

2009 Award
Fishing For Taggies
(International Playthings $28 Score:)

Three jolly looking fabric fish fit into a round “pond” with a mirrored interior. Baby uses a soft fabric “fishing” rod to magically catch the little fish. No hooks needed…the buried magnets do the job. All the pieces of this set are decorated with colorful taggies that babies will like to finger and explore. Fishing sets are an old-fashioned play theme updated here in plush and magnets that are safely out of reach. For beginners, this will be fun to simply fill and empty. Learning to use the rod will probably come a little later. 6 months & up.

Fleece Friends Cat Squeaker
(North American Bear Co. $12 Score:)

A little white cat with a squeaker inside is good for early interactions with baby. Squeak it to the left…squeak it to the right and baby will likely follow the sound. It may become a favorite little take along toy to tote about as they get older. It is white with licks of pink on the ears, nose and whiskers and has all stitched features for safety. Little Princess Blonde Musical
(North American Bear Co. $26 Score:)

Dressed in a pink velour dress, with hot pink shoes, this blonde princess has a permanent crown on her beribboned hair. She holds a small green bird in her hands and if you wind up her key she’ll play music from Mozart’s Magic Flute. Her clothes do not come off and her features are all stitched on. A smaller 10” Little Princess($14) with a soft body, velour dress, pink satin panties, and easy to grab arms and legs looks like the little sister of the musical doll. Her clothes are not removable, either. Infants & up.
