) Close up photos of barnyard animals with a rhyming text about their actions. Some will be a stretch, even for adult readers…How about “pigs bossing? “This is there to rhyme with the “chicken crossing,” but never mind. Most of the rhymes are fine, the photos are clear, and there is a lot to talk about. Age: Toddlers. Award Year: 2007.
) Winter has come and Sam is lucky to have a fine red coat, green fuzzy mittens and a blue wooly hat. But as he loses each of his things there is a repetitive rhythm to the little story that toddlers will soon catch onto and enjoy. Too bad the red coat is not as red as red should be. It’s a short and sweet story for 2 & up. Age: Toddlers. Award Year: 2007.
) A seaside adventure as the waves come in and knock down one sand castle and a determined little donkey and his dad rebuild again. The second story deals with a reluctant little bather and how his dad helps him overcome his fears of the water. Old toddlers/ young preschoolers. Age: Toddlers,Preschool. Award Year: 2007.

) One of an excellent series of books that invites conversations with young kids about simple lifestyle issues. It talks directly about cover one’s mouth when you cough, using a tissue when you sneeze, washing your hands, etc. O.K. it’s a little on the preachy side, but some things are worth repeating and finding them in a book may make a bigger impression. 2’s & up. Age: Toddlers,Preschool. Award Year: 2007.

) Charley has a wobbly tooth, so Maisy and his other friend go to the dentist with him. A playful choice for previewing a trip to the dentist. Nothing scary here, just a chair that goes up, down and around and a toothbrush that does the same. Age: Toddlers. Award Year: 2007.

) Newest in a fine series of sturdy board books with animal photos and rhyming couplets that describe the animals action. These active bunnies do not tend to look all that active…but never mind. For young animal lovers this will be hopping good fun. Look for others in the series. 2 & up. Age: Toddlers. Award Year: 2008.

) Turtle, his best friend, is copying Bossy Bear’s nasty ways. Seeing how Turtle behaves, Bossy Bear decides he’d better set a better example. Even the youngest listener is likely to “get” the idea here and maybe even supply the missing “pleases”. One can hope! 2 1/2 and up. Age: Toddlers. Award Year: 2009.
) A sturdy book with heavy card paper that won’t rip when shared on a visit to Grandma’s. There is also a Grandpa, Mommy and Daddy version in the series. The young storyteller is a green frog who goes to Grandma’s when parents are away. It’s very much a here and now story of the ordinary things they do. Here Granny is on the silly side, so this is a light and entertaining little book for young listeners 2-4.
Age: Toddlers,Preschool. Award Year: 2009.
