2006 Award
A Truck Goes Rattley-Bumpa
(Holt $14.95 Score:) Older toddlers and preschoolers love trucks and this is a perfect choice to satisfy that enthusiasm. Told in rhyme with bold primary colors, London introduces the bigger concept of the many kinds of trucks and the things they do. Younger than the wonderful concept book, "Truck Song", this is sure to win favor with those who are ready for a little more information found in the vehicles in a Donald Crews' book, but not so much that it goes over their heads. 2 & up.

2006 Award
Animal Babies
(by Vickie Weber, 3M $6.95 Score:) Handsome full-color photos of animal babies and their mothers light up the pages of this sturdy board book. Each animal is introduced with a partial view and some hints as to its identity, as in “an animal that goes ‘Oink’ and has a curly tail.” The turn page shows the whole animal and its mommy and the baby’s proper name, as in “piglet.”

2006 Award
10 Little Rubber Ducks
(by Eric Carle, HarperCollins $19.99 Score:) This is not so much a counting book as another one of Carle’s glorious knowing and naming books. Ten little toy ducks fall off a container ship and meet a variety of ocean-going creatures along the way. Ends with an electronic squeak that little listeners will love to anticipate and activate. 2 & up.

Age: Toddlers,Preschool. Award Year: 2006.

2006 Award
Tall
(by Jez Alborough, 3M $15.99 Score:) From the author of Hug, another very simple concept book that is told largely through illustrations and next to no words. This time a little chimp discovers that tall and small are really only a matter of perspective as the tall animals of the jungle keep giving Chimp a new way of seeing himself and others. 21⁄2 & up.

Age: Toddlers,Preschool. Award Year: 2006.

2007 Award
Sam's Winter Hat
(by Albert Lamn/ illus. by David McPhail , Scholastic $6.99 Score:) Winter has come and Sam is lucky to have a fine red coat, green fuzzy mittens and a blue wooly hat. But as he loses each of his things there is a repetitive rhythm to the little story that toddlers will soon catch onto and enjoy. Too bad the red coat is not as red as red should be. It’s a short and sweet story for 2 & up.

Age: Toddlers. Award Year: 2007.
