2013 Award
Animal Opposites, a Pop-up Book
(by Petr Horacek, Candlewick $15.99 Score:)

With flaps to lift and animals that pop-up, this is a visually lively way to introduce or reinforce concepts of opposites, although some examples are less concrete than others and children may have other words to describe opposites. A book of few words that stretches knowing and naming skills with a meerkat, sloth, cheetah, and words that describe their sounds, actions, size, or appearance. The paper engineering is dynamic! 3-6

2013 Award
Little Ghost Party
(by Jacques Duquennoy, Abrams Books $16.95 Score:)

Want a treat that is not to eat for your favorite trick or treater? Look for this novelty book that involves more tilting than reading. On each of the pages there are several dance poses that readers are invited to replicate by tipping the book and jiggling the little chains to make their ghosts look like the ones pictured. There isn't a lot of reading here, but kids are going to have to notice the directionality and build their own patience as they try to copy the dance poses. Put it on the coffee table as a calorie-free Halloween tradition.

One of the Art from the Start boardbooks for the very young that uses fine art painting of Mamas, Papas, and others as a novel way to introduce naming and knowing familiar images. Written in simple rhymes this little volume includes paintings by John Singer Sargent, Mary Cassatt, Vincent Van Gogh, Roy Lichtenstein and many others. A charming way to introduce art and language. Marked for 3 & up. We think even younger lap-sitting tots will like these images and listening to you talking about them.  Also in the series a collection called Animals in Art.
