It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown
(Warner Bros. $19.95 Score:)

A classic from 1966 that makes perfect entertainment with the re-mastered DVD edition! Poor Charlie gets rocks instead of treats in his trick-or-treat bag while the ever trusting Linus doesn’t give up his wait for the Great Pumpkin to appear. All the Peanuts gang is here...grouchy Lucy, who shows a caring side, and good old Snoopy the Flying Ace.  Unlike so much of the goolish holiday fare these days, this is a kinder-gentler kind of Halloween film the whole family will enjoy for many Halloweens to come.

2009 Award
Tucker's Spooky Halloween
(by Leslie McGuirk, Candlewick $14.99 Score:)

Tucker, an adventuresome dog, wants to be something spooky for Halloween. His owner dresses him in cute costumes, but Tucker is tired of looking cute. Finding Halloween stories that are right for younger children can be hard, but this one is right on the mark. It's another charming package in the Candlewick Storybook Animations collection. There's a small book, stickers, a small poster and best of all a two-sided disk that plays a DVD animated version of the story on one side and the audio on the other side.  Ages 3-6.

Age: Preschool, Early School Years. Award Year: 2009. Click here to purchase the product on Amazon.com.

2009 Award
What Makes a Fish a Fish?
(Dive Into Your Imagination $17.99 Score:)

One of three stunning underwater videos. This includes the hide and seek of the coral reef, how fishes get clean, close up looks at a variety of Frogfish, and among others a section on sharks that kids will gasp over! The film footage is striking! Informative and entertaining, this is broken into "chapters" so it need not be watched in its entirety in one sitting. Also excellent from the same company, Dive Into Diversity,  which includes the crusty crustaceans, night diving and a sensational view of an underwater forest of kelp. The film footage is striking!  Done with English and Spanish tracks these are a good choice for 5-10 and their adults.

Age: Preschool, Early School Years, Later School Years. Award Year: 2009. Click here to purchase the product on Amazon.com.

2009 Award
Who Lives in the Sea?
(Dive Into Your Imagination $17.99 Score:)

One of three stunning underwater videos. This one opens by comparing kids learning to swim underwater with the many forms of life in the sea. The film of the inhabitants of the sea is striking! Informative and entertaining, this is broken into "chapters" so it need not be watched in its entirety in one sitting. We especially enjoyed the images of those scavengers the nudi, nudi, nudibranchs and the eight armed animals and how they use their tentacles to feed! Also, from the same company, Dive Into Diversity, which includes amazing undewater footage of a kept forest, crusty crustatians and night diving scenes. Done with English and Spanish tracks this is a good choice for 5-10 and their adults.

Age: Preschool, Early School Years, Later School Years. Award Year: 2009. Click here to purchase the product on Amazon.com.

2009 Award
Ocean Life Book and DVD
(by Cynthia Stierie/ photos by Annie Crawley, Reader's Digest $17.99 Score:) Handsome still photos are used to illustrate this big book with factoids that school aged kid will pour over. But it’s the DVD with live footage of life under the water that sets this apart. Using an alphabet format this is a little less fluid than Annie Crawley’s other DVD’s such as Who Lives in the Sea?, What Makes a Fish a Fish?, or Dive into Diversity. That said, lots of kids like to be able to hold a book in their hands and look at the pictures for as long as they wish, rather than the fleeting images on a video. 5 & up.

Age: Early School Years. Award Year: 2009.

2010 Award
Owl Babies
(Candlewick $14.99 Score:)

Another gem by Martin Waddell and illustrated by Patrick Benson are brought together in a marvelous package that is a perfect take along on trips or for quiet times at home. Three little owls awake to find their Mommy is gone. The three comfort themselves by sitting close to each other in a tree top awaiting her return. All's well that ends well and this small tale of separation is a reassuring one that speaks to a common childhood concern. The story is lightly animated on DVD with art adapted from the original illustrations. Or, flip the disk and open the book and follow along with the narration that has signals for when to turn the page. Like other sets in the Candlewick series there are stickers based on the art and a scene for moving the play pieces about and retelling the story…or making up further adventures. All in all a great play values! 3-6

Corduroy...and more stories about caring
(Scholastic $14.95 Score:)

Only one story featured on this DVD is animated, that is the classic tale of The Happy Lion with its jolly illustrations by Roger Duvoisin brought to life with mild animation. The other stories featured, Corduroy, Mike Mulligan and I Love You Like Crazy Cakes are done with moving camea that zooms in and out, but no animated action. For some children this may be a deal breaker. We hope not. This collection of noteworthy picture books includes a read along feature that beginning readers will enjoy. They are paced slow enough so that beginners will have no problem following along.

Age: Preschool, Early School Years. Award Year: 2008. Click here to purchase the product on Amazon.com.

Make Way For Ducklings..and more delightful duck stories
(Scholastic $12.95 Score:)

There is one live action story in this collection, Angus and the Ducks, based on Marjorie Flck’s classic Scottie dog, Angus. All the other well known and award winning storybooks here are done with music and moving camera to enliven the still images. So, for a generation of kids who have grown up on animation, this may look odd. That said, this disk has several storybooks that every child should know. Robert McCLoskey’s Make Way for Ducklings was the winner of the Caldecott award in 1942 and remains a beauty of a book to see on screen and between covers. Also on this DVD, The Story About Ping, a little duck who strays too far from home and lives with the consequences as well as the punishment, he was trying to avoid. This has long been a favorite. 3-8
