2008 Award
Shop and Grow Walker
(Little Tikes $19.95 Score:) The Shop and Grow Walker tied for the overall highest marks this year in this category (with Fisher-Price's Go Baby Go Stride to Ride Lion). Our testers loved that this walker had a wide opening in the back, a big roller in front, and popping beads inside. The shopping cart aspect of this toy also was a plus, and parent testers also liked that the music could be turned off. The push bar on this walker lifts up so that an adult can push along with their toddler (there is also a lower bar). This aspect was not that important to any of the families that tested the product, but they all commented favorably on the clean, uncomplicated design. The company has signed a verification form that this product contains no lead or phthalates.

2008 Award
Laugh and Learn Learning Kitchen
(Fisher-Price $64.99 Score:) Really more of an activity center for toddlers, this plastic kitchen has a small refrigerator on one side (with shape-sorter function) and a sink/stove/oven combo on the other side. They are connected with an arch that has "educational" songs and music. Older babies and young toddlers will enjoy going through the archway, playing with the ball drop, and cooking up something special. While we could do without the lessons about the alphabet and opposites, our testers enjoyed making things happen. Still top rated, Laugh and Learn Learning Home ($70). This "little house" is just the right size for active play and making things happen. It has a door that opens and shuts and is big enough to crawl through, lights that turn off and on, doorbell that rings, ball drop, and shape sorter, among other interesting features. A great first birthday gift to enjoy throughout this year and probably the next. They say 6 months to 3. We’d say one and up would be a better bet. RECALL INFO: This toy was voluntarily recalled in 2007 due to a small parts problem from the faucet or the clock hands can detach and pose a choking hazard. The CPSC reports that "consumers should immediately take the recalled toys away from children and contact Fisher-Price for a free repair kit." Call Fisher Price at (888) 812-7187 or visit www.service.mattel.com.

2009 Award
Step2 Neighborhood Fun Center
(Step 2 $279.99 Score:)

We really liked the concept of this playhouse that combines active play with a setting for pretend. One side has a slide just right for steady on their feet toddlers and preschoolers. Another side has an activity wall- complete with a ring toss, crawl through door and hoop/loop ball target (comes with balls for tossing). The third side has a place for real or pretend snacks (there's a small table and two attached seats). The fourth side has a door and pass through window. If you don't have room for both a playhouse and a slide--this certainly will fill the bill.

The company has submitted our safety verification form. Note, we did not test this independently in a lab.

Step2 Canopy Wagon
(Step 2 $99.99 Score:) Our 2 and 3 year old testers loved going for a ride in this new wagon that comes with a removable plastic canopy cover. Kids tend to love covers since it makes a smaller cozy space - that's just for them. Parents like them since they keep the sun out. Note--this wagon does not have a door. Our testing family did not miss the door option and indicated that the kids had no trouble getting out of the wagon. Comes with seatbelts--a nice added safety feature. There are also deep well holes (also a plus) and two cup holders. The company has signed a verification form complying with our safety requirements. We did not independently test this toy in a lab.

Rolliphant Slides
(Edushape $23.99 Score:) If you've read our reviews long enough over the years, you'd know that we love tracking ball runs and we also like bath toys. So here's a really amazing toy in our book-- a ball run designed for the bath. Three elephant heads have trunks that connect to each other. The over sized balls travel slowly (a plus) out of the elephants' mouths and down their trunks. Comes with three balls. One has a spinner in the middle of it-- really neat. Ok, we admit it, we're toy geeks. The company has signed a verification form complying with our safety requirements. We did not independently test this toy in a lab.

Alex Jr Round the Farm Ball
(Alex $24.99 Score:)

One of the most adorable products that has come in for review all year! The soft fabric ball has four different animal faces. Each has their own set of ears that protrude from the ball and have a sound effect appropriate for the related animal. (The frog ribbits, the cat meows, the pig oinks, and the dog woofs.) There is also a small finger hole that our baby testers thought was great fun. On the other hand, we had mixed reviews on the Alex Jr. Busy Bee Discovery Flower. This floor activity toy has lots of things to explore but the electronic version of It's a Small World was just too tinny for our taste.

The company has signed a verification form complying with our safety requirements. We did not independently test this toy in a lab.

Here's a horse to bet on as a winner! It combines so many features that are sure to please the toddler in your life. It's a bright red horse with yellow muzzle and colorfully patterned legs. Small brightly colored satin ribbons are used to create a mane and trip for his legs. Trotter not only has big cloppy hooves trimmed with ribbons, he comes with built- in sound effects. He whinnies and hooves clop, clop as he is moved. Stand him still and no sounds emanate from his being. Forget all your preconceived notions about fabric toys. Fun for playing with baby and for growing independent play patterns for older tots.

The company has signed a verification form complying with our safety requirements. We did not independently test this toy in a lab. SNAP ACTIVITIES: Making things happen can be challenging, but not with this jolly little horse that makes a clop, clop sound as well as a whinnying sound as it is moved. This is a pretty magical animal, made of bright red plush with multicolored ribbon mane that kids will like to touch, For silly fun run this horsie up and down the child’s tummy as it goes clip clop.

Lamaze Pond Stackers
(Learning Curve International $14.99 Score:)

Six colorful magnetic stackers in the shapes of pond critters. Their magnets are totally inside the play pieces for safe keeping and they “adjust” so that when north and north meet one magically turns inside, so that the play pieces connect. These critters fit into small hands and have chewy wings and tails for teething. Good for developing color concept language. 6 months & up.

The company has signed a verification form complying with our safety requirements. We did not independently test this toy in a lab. SNAP ACTIVITY: Designed with the magnets inside for safe keeping, these little pond critters fit into a hand easily and allow children to develop their grasping and letting go skills. Best of all the magnets help the critters connect. How high can you stack these magnetic critters. As you use these with your child, reinforce color concepts by referring to the blue bird, the orange fish, the green frog.
