My Pirate Ship
(Mega Bloks $29.99 Score:) This is a play theme preschoolers often enjoy. Here the play pieces are big enough for small hands to enjoy safely. The ship has sound effects, a crew of two pirates, a monkey, a parrot and a mermaid. They say 1 & up- we’d say more like 2 and a half to three. This would have been a gold winner except for the misleading age label. (800) 465-6342

Power Touch Baby
(Fisher-Price $29.99 Score:) This toy came too late for our annual book. It will not replace real picture books that baby can explore and enjoy. The mechanics of how a book works still require hands-on discoveries and the quality of a storybook like Good Night Moon or Runaway Bunny cannot be replaced by this sort of know and name talking book. That sid- this has reasonably clear pictures and responds to the turn of a page and touch of a hand. We have not seen the add-on books, but the platform and first book make a nice novelty.A good tool for talking and knowing and naming games. (800) 432-5437. Activity:This is an easy to activate language toy. YOu can play I spy games giving color riddles about objects in the pictures of shope words in your riddle..I spy something round and green.....etc. All of these kinds of knowing and naming - listening and finding games are a fun way to interact and reinfoce language and concepts. Together, you and your child can make up your own stories about what's happening in the picture.

Peek a Blocks IncrediBlock
(Fisher-Price $19.99 Score:) Tots loved standing up to play activities on each side of this huge block. This is a multi-faceted activity "table" that has lots of surprises. (800) 432-5437. Activities: Best fun, push a button and stacks of see-through blocks go kaboom! Or put single blocks on top of a spinner that says the name of the object inside the little block. Develops language as well as dexterity.

Plan Toys Shape Sorter
(Brio $20 Score:) A handsome curved wooden platform holds four shapes in place. Cut-out shape boards are fitted over the circle, square, rectangle, and triangle. Boards can be used to reinforce color, shapes, or fractions. Also see Plan Toys’ Shape & Sort ($20 ) with three shapes that drop in and slide out—Abracadabra!—when platform is touched. 2005 Award
Zolo Stacrobats
(Kushies $45 Score:) Five colorful fabric acrobats and three colorful balls can be balanced (sort of) and arranged in multiple ways on their colorful magnetic fabric balancing three-ring circus style pad. Magnets inside make for interesting experiments that will be going ka-boom on a regular basis. A fun toy for interacting with young toddlers. Play figures store in the magnetic base, so toss the plastic bag they come in. This is a pricey toy, but attractive. 1 & up. (800) 841 5330.

Learning Pots & Pans
(Fisher-Price $17.97 Score:) On the plus side, these pots have encased beads that are fun to move about, but the toy requires the pots to be stacked in one correct order (way too hard for babies and young toddlers). There’s a shape sorter in the lid and music in the base. This is one of those toys with the alphabet song and counting that’s marked for 6–36 months. In the end, this set tries to do too much and fails. (800) 432-5437.

2006 Award
Angel Fish Rocker
(Step 2 $40 Score:) Reintroduced, this all-plastic fish has been an old favorite for toddlers. The seat is narrow and pretty easy to mount. Can be used indoors or out. But a warning: supervision is needed as rapid rocking can lead to spills. This is bigger than your average rocker and has been known to tip. (800) 347-8372.

2006 Award
Little Champs Sports Center
(Little Tikes $29.95 Score:) Toddlers like to imitate older siblings and this little sports set allows them to shoot baskets, hit a baseball, and spin a football. The basketball has a sound chip scoreboard that cheers them on and the baseball clicks as it turns on the post. 9 mos. & up. (800) 321-0183.

2006 Award
Triple Play Tunnel
(Step 2 $39.99 Score:) Knowing how toddlers love going in and out of their own spaces, this is great fun—especially for tight spaces. Our toddler tester liked using it for cruising around as well as crawling through (800) 347-8372.

WaterWheel Table
(Step 2 $39.99 Score:) We had mixed reviews on this one. For stand-up water play this seems a great choice for the patio or terrace. It doesn’t take up a lot of room and allows for spilling, filling, splashing, and getting good and wet! But be forewarned, there seem to be problems with leaks! The plugs on the table are not water tight, so you will have to refill this and not use it indoors. That said, this is also a toy that needs total adult supervision. (800) 347-8372. See Preschool chapter for sand and water table, p. 100.
