2012 Award
One Special Day
(by Lola M. Schaefer/ illus. Jessica Meserve, Hyperion $16.99 Score:)

Spenser is many things....he is strong as a bear, funny as a monkey, wild as a tiger....but when his parents bring home the new baby, he becomes gentle. Children will like knowing and naming the creatures on each turn page while parents will no doubt like the underlying message of big brothers and sisters being gentle. 2-4

2012 Award
Ten Little Apples
(illus. by Naralia Vasquez, Child's Play $10.99 Score:)

Turn the dial and one apple after another falls off the tree. This is a fun way to reinforce counting skills as the apples fall off the tree. So many counting books go the other way, adding one item more at a time. This introduces subtraction in a very visual way. Based on a classic singing game that is fun to sing as you share this. 3-6

Boat Works
(by Tom Slaughter, Blue Apple $13.99 Score:)

Newest in a series of fold-out books that give little clues about the whole object that is slowly revealed as the small square page opens into a giant square image that is four times bigger than the original. Boat lovers will o-o-o-o and ah-h-h-h as they discover a rowboat, sailboat, ferry, tugboat, ocean liner and the harbor. This foldout format was also used in several Toyportfolio Platinum award winning books by the late Simms Taback from Blue Apple.

2012 Award
Mockingbird Song
(illus. by Carol Thompson, Childs Play $9.99 Score:)

Charming illustrations accompany the familiar lullaby, Hush Little Baby, but the verses here are not the usual. If you know the original words for forever, you may have trouble accepting this newly minted version, but in a sense they give both mama and papa, the singing parents some freedom to make up more new verses that are tailor made for their own little one. This is sort of close to the familiar and though some of the rhymes are only near rhymes, it works. Fair warning--if you do not like variations on old classics, skip this. 0-2

2012 Award
No!
(by Marta Altes, Childs Play $7.99 Score:)

You are going to love this mischievous doggy called "No!" At least that is what he says his name is. In fact that is what someone is constantly shouting at him. Kids are going to chime in on the repetition and enjoy the fun of calling out "NOOOO!" This is one of those books that beginning readers will be able to read independently before long! 4-8

2012 Award
Magritte's Marvelous Hat
(by D.B. Joahnson, Houghton Mifflin $16.99 Score:)

D.B. Johnson hangs out a welcome to the world of surrealism. Instead of talking about it, his character, "Magritte" lives in that upside down world where it can be both day and night in the same moment and hats can ride above one’s head, so as not to push down one’s ears. With transparency pages that add to the visual delights, this is a playful introduction to the original thought process of the surrealists. A great book for before or after a visit to the museum. 7 & up.

(by Judy Sierra/illus. by Tim Bowers, Knopf $16.99 Score:)

A book about manners with a big dash of humor. This will make the whole notion of politeness more palatable. It all begins when a little girl meets a dinosaur in the supermarket--where else would that happen? The two have repeated encounters that necessitate predictable courtesies that children will enjoy chiming in on. 3-6
