Kettrike Happy
(Kettler $119.99 Score:) This gender-proof primary-colored line of trikes comes with a push bar you can control the trike like a stroller. This line tends to run small and fit younger, smaller preschoolers. Our recommendation with all bikes is to take your child and try them out first.

2005 Award
Push Around Buggy SAFETY RECALL
(Step 2 $40 Score:)

NOTE: This toy and the Whisper Buggy are subject to a safety recall from the CPSC (May 12, 2010). To read the release, click here,  and to arrange for a free repair kit from Step 2 call (866) 860-1887 or visit www.step2.com.

Little toddlers can get into this vehicle without climbing. It is not a toy for them to run with foot power, it is more like a stroller for giving your tot a ride. It has a seat belt, push bar, and a storage compartment up front for treasures. Tested far better than Step 2's other ride-ons such as the Basket Ride-On ($21.99), a low-to-the-ground red three-wheeler with a big yellow basket for treasures. Testers found its lack of steering a drawback. Step 2's red Motorcycle ($21.99) was not balanced enough for toddlers and the small red Classy Cruiser ($34.99) was too difficult for young riders to get in and out of—and too small for older riders. None have steering.

Age: Toddlers. Award Year: 2005.

2005 Award
Little Tikes Climb and Slide Castle
(Little Tikes $74.99 Score:) Designed for toddlers, this mini-castle-style climber has a low slide and steering wheel on top for dramatic play. It's 43" high. They say one and up; we'd say more like steady-on-their-feet toddlers—who are rarely younger than 18–24 mos. Requires supervision.

Age: Toddlers. Award Year: 2005.

2006 Awards
Endless Adventures Tikes Town Playhouse
(Little Tikes $280 Score:) Toddlers and preschoolers love having special spaces that are designed just for them. For older toddlers going in and out of the space, playing peek a boo will be the name of the game. As they grow older the pretend play will become more elaborate and detailed. This 58” high playhouse has an innovative design that invites lots of pretend possibilities with four different themed sides to the structure (firehouse/schoolhouse, gas station with pump, grocer store/bank with ATM machine (of course) and a sports wall complete with hoop.

Age: Toddlers,Preschool. Award Year: 2006.

2006 Award
Pushing Car and Doll Pram
(Haba $159 Score:) Our test family with three under the age of 4 got right into active pretend play with both of these beautifully styled push-about toys. The Push Car ($159 ) is low to the ground and balanced enough so that a little sister or a big teddy bear could ride about as a larger child pushed. Furnished with seat cushions and pocket for treasures; made of varnished beech wood with rubber wheels, it maneuvers well, even in tight spaces. Equally well designed, a red and blue Doll Pram ($130 ) comes with a cushion seat and accommodates several dolls. You can adjust the push bar as children grow, so this will grow into the preschool years. (800) 468-6873.

Age: Toddlers,Preschool. Award Year: 2006.

2006 Award
Rocking Wobble Whale
(Mamas and Papas $79.99 Score:) (Shopping Note: We have just been informed that both the Whale and the Duck are unfortunately sold out in the US.) Soft and easy to mount, this blue and green whale has a wooden disc base and plays “If You’re Happy and You Know It” when you press its spout. An almost instant hit with our 18-month-old tester. With its quacking moving beak, Rocking Dudley Duck ($79.99 ) seemed almost “alive” to our little tester. Once the surprise passed, the bright yellow bird with crinkle sounds in its wings became a fine un-feathered friend. Some of our testers found the duck quacking fun; others were less amused. (310) 631-2222.

Age: Toddlers. Award Year: 2006.

2009 Awards
Taggies Colours Toss
(Taggies $19.95 Score:)

This 2007 Platinum Award winner has been updated with brighter colors that we absolutely love. The design remains the same - a big fabric ball with multiple patterns, ribbon taggies to grab, and a wonderful jingle inside is one of the best toys for babies. It’s covered with soft velour but slightly understuffed to make it easier to grasp. The company has signed a verification form complying with our safety requirements. We did not independently test this toy in a lab.

Age: Infants, Toddlers. Award Year: 2009. Click here to purchase the product on Amazon.com.

2007 Award
Bounce and Spin Zebra
(Fisher-Price $45 Score:)

Forget rocking horses, the 21st-century child rides a zebra that turns when the rider bounces on it. A spinner in the handle sets off random arcade sounds that (fortunately) can be turned off. Our 20-month-old triplets loved this toy, but some parents will find the sound over the top.  Note: Low-to-the-ground rockers for toddlers are used for a short time, but match the young toddler's love of motion and repetitive action. These are low enough to the ground so that the older toddler can get on and off with independence, and they're slow enough to be soothing. Often promoted for older infants and young toddlers, these are a better choice for toddlers who are steady on their feet. (This was especially true this year where several of our contenders made the rounds with our testers - much like Goldilocks and the Three Bears ... some testers found the rockers too small [and boring] and others found them too high. So our recommendation is to try before you buy).

Age: Toddlers. Award Year: 2007.
