2004 Award
Are Eggs Square?
(DK $6.99 Score:) This is one of a series of four small books that invite giggles and loud No, No, No's! Each new item is introduced with a silly question- turn the page for the correct answer. Bold graphics and cut-out windows or see-though turn pages offer upside down humor that toddlers and young preschoolers enjoy. Other titles in the series.. Are Elephants Tiny? ; Are Lemons Blue?; Do Cows Bark? 18 months & up.

Age: Toddlers. Award Year: 2004.

2004 Award
Baby Genius Colors, Numbers & Baby Animals
(DK $7.99 Score:) Arrived too late for our book, but here is a new boardbook series for talking and looking at together. The Color book has no confusing other colors on most pages- so toddlers will get a "Gestalt" of what is red, blue, etc. Their number book goes only to five- perfect for beginners, though some of the images are a bit fuzzy; Baby Animals show the same animal in multiple poses- so there's lots to talk about. There's also a shape book, but we think this is a concept for older tots- not those who are barely talking yet. 6 months & up.

Age: Infants,Toddlers. Award Year: 2004.

2005 Award
Diddle, Diddle Dumpling and Little Miss Muffet
(illus. by Tracey Campbell Pearson, Farrar Straus $5.95 Score:) Lively illustrations of a toddler take these simple rhymes out of the relm of nonsense verse and into the world of here and now without being scary. A charming way to give both of these old Mother Goose rhymes a new life. 1 & up.

Age: Infants,Toddlers. Award Year: 2005.

2006 Awards
Off to Bed & Out to Play
(created by Michel Blake/photos by Trish Grant, Candlewick $5.99 Score:) Cleverly designed knowing and naming books with black and white photographs and featured object in full color. Edges of the cardboard pages are staggered for easy turning, although we didn’t find them that much easier. It’s something like still life shots from Pleasantville for the toddler set.

Age: Infants,Toddlers. Award Year: 2006.

What's That Sound?
(Soft Play $6.99 Score:) Ernie wants to know what to call each of the items that makes a special sound in this cloth book. There’s a squeaky duck, a ringing phone, a choo-choo train, a boing-boing ball, a chirping bird, a mooing cow, and a big bus that says beep! An interactive book that adults will need to activate at first. A good take-along travel toy. (800) 515-5437.

Age: Infants,Toddlers. Award Year: 2006.

2007 Award
Busy Barnyard
(by John Schindel/ photos by Steven Holt, Tricycle Press $6.99 Score:) Close up photos of barnyard animals with a rhyming text about their actions. Some will be a stretch, even for adult readers…How about “pigs bossing? “This is there to rhyme with the “chicken crossing,” but never mind. Most of the rhymes are fine, the photos are clear, and there is a lot to talk about.

Age: Toddlers. Award Year: 2007.

2008 Award
Busy Bunnies
(by John Schindel/ photos by Steven Holt, Tricycle Press $6.95 Score:) Newest in a fine series of sturdy board books with animal photos and rhyming couplets that describe the animals action. These active bunnies do not tend to look all that active…but never mind. For young animal lovers this will be hopping good fun. Look for others in the series. 2 & up.

Age: Toddlers. Award Year: 2008.
