) This all rubberwood push toy has a cute little duck that walks along with flip flop orange webbed feet. It makes an amusing quacking sound as it goes along. For a less noisy variation there’s a blue Push-Along Elephant ($35) that is slightly less noisy and a little harder to push. Though this is a pricey toy, it’s a classic toy that will appeal to toddlers. Once they are up on their feet and walking they enjoy anything that moves along with them and their active independent life style. 19 months & up. The lower score reflects that there was some difficulty for many of testers to push these two with ease. The company has signed a verification form complying with our safety requirements. We did not independently test this toy in a lab.

) Too bad they added so much sound to good old Snoopy. This little black and white pup now barks and sort of sings the melody of B-I-N-G-O with incessant barking as his “leash” is pulled. This is an example of how less was more. Too bad, Snoopy! 1 & up. (800) 432-5437. We suggest instead Ambi’s Max Pull Along Dog (Brio $17.50 ), an adorable yellow, black, and red pooch. 11/2 & up. (888) 274-6869.

) Our fifteen-month-old testers loved the push-button sound effects, lights, and vibrating motion on this low-to-the-ground ride-on. This vehicle is less wide and lighter than Radio Flyer’s Red Roadster, and easier for tots to get on and off of. Age: Toddlers. Award Year: 2005.

) Reintroduced, this all-plastic fish has been an old favorite for toddlers. The seat is narrow and pretty easy to mount. Can be used indoors or out. But a warning: supervision is needed as rapid rocking can lead to spills. This is bigger than your average rocker and has been known to tip. (800) 347-8372. Age: Toddlers,Preschool. Award Year: 2006.

) Toddlers like to imitate older siblings and this little sports set allows them to shoot baskets, hit a baseball, and spin a football. The basketball has a sound chip scoreboard that cheers them on and the baseball clicks as it turns on the post. 9 mos. & up. (800) 321-0183. Age: Infants,Toddlers. Award Year: 2006.

) Knowing how toddlers love going in and out of their own spaces, this is great fun—especially for tight spaces. Our toddler tester liked using it for cruising around as well as crawling through (800) 347-8372.

) We had mixed reviews on this one. For stand-up water play this seems a great choice for the patio or terrace. It doesn’t take up a lot of room and allows for spilling, filling, splashing, and getting good and wet! But be forewarned, there seem to be problems with leaks! The plugs on the table are not water tight, so you will have to refill this and not use it indoors. That said, this is also a toy that needs total adult supervision. (800) 347-8372. See Preschool chapter for sand and water table, p. 100. Age: Toddlers,Preschool. Award Year: 2006.
) A toddler-size red-and-yellow wagon that comes with everything needed for the beach or sandbox—a bucket, sand molds, rake, shovel, sieve, and watering can. 18 mos. & up. (800)421-4153. Age: Toddlers. Award Year: 2006.
) Cheerful and colorfully attired penguins are numbered and ready to be knocked down. Our parent testers had some difficulty getting the penguins to stand up before their kids lost interest in bowling. “Throwing” the penguins quckly became the name of the game. (800) 840-4916.
Age: Toddlers. Award Year: 2007.

) Our testers enjoyed giving this sturdy, foot-powered red car a ride. Comes with a steering wheel that turns (and there's a working horn). The only drawback is that the steering wheel does not function. There is no connection to the front wheels. There is a set of smaller caster wheels at the front end which make it easier for kids to move around. The "no-steering" is part of larger and unfortunate trend in the ride-in category. That said, this is still a beautiful ride-in for steady on their feet toddlers.
